MOONSTAR: Dani had to admit. This was kind of awesome. Running into the fray, the smell of burning wreckage and the sounds of battle all around her. She imagined this is what her people felt as they fought for the lands that were rightfully theirs. A surge of adrenaline, a roar on the lips. It was nothing short of exhilarating.

She looked at their enemy, a really big friggin robot. She supposed she would be more use on the assault team. Not that she didn't want to help civilians, but her power wasn't exactly helpful for a bunch of likely-panicked, and certainly indured non-combatants. She looked at Laser. he seemed a nice kid, and had helped out with the two feral girls.

"I'm gonna help with the robot. Fear-based powers plus panicky people will not make for a good combination. Cover me so I don't end up Indian Squash, will you?" she asked. She looked up at the robot, sensing the human mind within. That was just what she needed.

She hit her comm. ~Alright people, dunno how well this will work… he may get erratic, he might piss himself and eject, so be ready.~

She looked up and closed her eyes, focusing on the pilot. The one thing that terrified him above all others. "They say… there's nothing to fear… but fear itself," she said, her voice getting darker and more… primal. The whispers started up. Like some Lovecraftian horror whispering in her ear.

"Guess what? I'm Fear Itself." With that, an invisible surge of psionic energy rushed into the mecha. And before his eyes, the image of true terror formed.

ROCKSLIDE: Rockslide looked back to Whisper, waiting for her to get behind him, but apparently she was capable of using her powers from this nicer, safer distance from the commotion.

"Alright," he said, dropping the SUV. He was going to use it for her protection in reaching the bus, but if she wasn't coming along, then there was no need to bring it along-- his rocky layer was enough to keep him protected, albeit a little chipping, but hey, that was a small price to pay.

… [INKLING: I need a new door, a.s.a.p]…

"Gotcha," Rockslide responded to his comm-badge, and with a smirk, charged towards the bus, his hard, heavy footsteps leaving small cracks in his wake. He braced himself for whatever could hit him, though he doubted anything could do more than make him fall over.

Rockslide arrived at the front of the bus, where he saw Inkling trying to smash through the front window. Trying to. City buses had some pretty durable wind-shields.

"Yo, Ink, I can smash through this, but the glass is gonna fly all up in the bus," he said into his comm-badge, because she probably wouldn't hear him otherwise over the din around them.

"You see somewhere else I could smash through? It'd be faster gettin' 'em with two doors."

HELLION: “Dammit-” despite the strike from Hellion and the others, the mech refused to fall, resiliently compensating for each consecutive blow. The telekinetic furrowed his brow, looking around, trying for some inspiration. These things were big, and they were tough…

The roar of rockets pierced through the general din of the scene as a pair of rockets flew from one of the mechs and made their way towards Jean-Paul. Eyes wide, Julian stood there, watching as they flew through the air following his classmate.

There was a moment when everything seemed to slow to a stop and Julian realized what he was doing. He was in a street fighting a pair of robots- there were terrified people littering the streets, and he was running around with his classmates playing superhero. It was absolutely ridiculous… and he couldn’t fight the realization that he absolutely loved it. Another pump of adrenaline in his veins, and he snapped back to reality.

“Shit,” he said, grasping the gravity of his classmate’s predicament. He was being chased by rockets- you know, the things that exploded. It didn’t even occur to Julian that he should leave the situation alone- the guy had a big head, but that didn’t mean he wanted anything to happen to the guy… least of all death by rocket. Doing what came naturally, Julian reached out towards one of the rockets, smothering it in his electric green glow, and fought to disrupt its flight.

"I think it's time for a new plan- something tells me we're not gonna win by just throwing random shit at them!"

LASER: Instead of a response to his asaking if he should help with the robot, Laser got Mooonstar asking for her to cover him. "What do you mean you're going for the robot?" he asked, keeping in step with the Cheyenne. "If I recall your powers aren't physical… oh." Realization dawned on him, "Fuck with the guy in the robot, got it."

If it didn't work, Laser would take his own shots at the thing. For now, he made sure to be ready to bring a shield up around them if necessary. He stayed close enough, he hoped, to be able to cover them, and not look like he was invading Danielle's personal space.

Above them, Laser saw the blur that was Northstar. Inkling and the big rocky kid were rescuing the citizens. Powerhouse, one of his teammates, went off to help Northstar.

Guess we're supposed to be working as a team on this with the other team, he thought to himself. It seemed kind of wierd, since they were set up as separate squads, that they would be working together instead of against each other.

How were they supposed to win if they weren't in competition with the, well competition?

INKLING: The missile ‘grabbed’ by Hellion shimmered gently at first… then the effect grew stronger… most notably, this was due to it essentially being the approximate length of an adult’s forearm, measured elbow to wrist. Hellion’s ‘grip’ on the thing was tenuous at best, affecting it enough to alter the course, but that course taking on the quality of a sports-kite caught in a shearing wind. The missile dove, tucked, rolled, shot upward, flipped sideways, and finally its squirrely aerial path rammed directly down into the center of the nearby sidewalk… into the newsstand Inkling had previously bounced off of… a fluttering cascade of flaming periodicals filled the air, as the small shack blew to smithereens…

Northstar might note the other missile re-engaging its lock and veering around in descent on his position… at least the one he held at the time…

Powerhouse’s summarization pointed out the exact case… The large assemblies were merely an expansion of the frame, protecting the all-too-human pilot inside… How others would react to his suggestion remained, as it should be, their decision to make…

Moonstar’s focus cast upon the Mecha… a moment of some confusion shifted on the pilot’s face inside the cockpit’s shell… and some stark terror, normally unseen to the observers in the Squads but enhanced by the DR to allow them the shared vision, effectively became a very real awareness to the pilot himself, and a lingering impression of ‘serpents’ to Moonstar.

The inside of the cockpit was not simply moving… it writhed under the Pilot’s view.. flooded with very real snakes of the most deadly varieties… To the DR-assisted observers, a ghostly multitude of Asps, Pit-Vipers, Cobras, and their sub-types, sliding over his chest, and legs, rearing back along the control console and striking… The pilot began screaming inside the cockpit, kicking at the rendered illusion frantically…

Externally… the panic of the pilot threw the Mech into a forward charge command… its bulk lurching toward both the Vanguard and Paragons, and seeming intent on ramming the collective core of where they stood…

~~At the bus…~~~

“A door is just…” she continued, drawing back the arm yet again and aiming for the front window corner where the largest collection of spider-webbing cracks seemed to be forming… Just then…

BLINK BLINK

The view just outside had gained two large stone-shod legs and a pair of equally rocky forearms… The Amethyst Amazon grinned a little more widely as the people behind her had begun to lower the pained tones to more calm as well, no doubt due to Whisper’s effect. Marina clicked back the Comm-link to respond.

“Ockam’s Razor works in this case, Rockslide.. the first, simplest solution is usually correct. Just take out the window. Gimme a few moments to get the bus driver out of the way and get the rest closest to the front to move back… I think the seats can still shield them from flying stuff, and this looks like ‘safety-glass’ to me from the way it’s cracking… Rip it out toward you if you can…”

Marina turned around, and used the hardhat as a pointer.

Alright folks… On the tour today… we get to see how the physics of a heavy frontal impact actually works… You all need to move back… third row behind the seats minimum distance from the front… NOW!”

Marina dropped the hardhat, and slung her hands into tendrils to latch securely around both shoulders and under the armpits of the driver, dragging him backwards behind her to a shielded spot.

“Okay, Rocky.. showtime for your audition in window replacement theory…”

The trailing wisps inside The Lavender Lass' membrane were whipping about faster than a pack of metal-heads in a mosh-pit on crank at a Korn show… but she was ‘keeping it together’, mentally… perhaps some of Whisper’s effect assisting there as well…

Message 55 of 107. [#35670]

Summary: One of the Missiles gets more or less ‘diverted’ by Hellion, taking out a news-stand, and Moonstar’s approach throws the previously focused Mech into a panicked, unguided CHARGE toward the core of both Squads… Inkling gets the message and preps those inside the bus for Rockslide’s impact, while they seem to be responding to Whisper’s ‘calming’ effect.

WISDOM: Right, big scary scenario they had to deal with. This was the type of stuff the Special Air Service specialized in and were considered among the best at that type of operation in the world. Sadly for Peter Paul Winston Wisdom, he was a seventeen year old student who had zero training in that area. But they had to get moving and do this right.

*What did me bartitsu teacher always say, train as you fight, fight as you train. I just need to imagine we’re about to lose all these people and deal. If I screw up, I’ll ask for more help from Scott Summers. No matter what he thinks of you, the man knows this operation style better than anyone around here.* Pete thought as everything began. Nobody else was doing anything, so he took a moment and assessed the scene to be sure. Now he was ready.

“Alright Vanguard, time to get off our collective arses! Moonstar and Laser got mech one! Chamber, Powerhouse, take out mech two! Wild Child, Psylocke, get on the rescues! Wild Child, get the furthest one and work inward! Psylocke, scan for anyone else. I’ll be with you two! If anyone needs a backup, call and we’ll move things about! Let’s go people, lives are in the balance!” Wisdom roared to his team.

ROCKSLIDE: A confused look crossed Santo's stony face. "Uh… okay." He didn't know who Occam was, nor knew anything about his razor, but nonetheless he'd smash the glass out like Inkling ordered.

… [INKLING: "Rip it out toward you if you can…"]

"Yeah, not gonna happen."

Rockslide didn't know anything about bus window installation or removal, so he was pretty much going to just smash the thing out. Besides, Inkling had all the people out of the way, so they wouldn't get hurt. He'd try his best, though, to minimalize the shrapnel.

With a curled fist, Rockslide smashed through the glass with a loud crash, leaving a nice hole in his wake with some cracks decorated around. Hmmm… this was tough stuff.

Suddenly, though, he realized what Inkling meant by ripping it out.

"Oh," he said simply, and with his elbow smashed the inner circumference of the hole to widen it. He did the same with the other side, so that the hole was big enough to fit both his arms through, which he did. He brought his elbows back to flex his back, which resulted in the hole widening even more.

With a few more elbows and punches, with a couple kicks and headbutts thrown in there, Rockslide managed to clear out the front window, leaving most of the wake of destruction outside the bus.

"Alright," he said, brushing off some shards of glass that had fallen on his shoulder; "what's the next move, Purps?"

Purps. You know. Short for purple, like Inkling. Oh Santo and his clever nicknames for everyone.

AGNI: STORYTELLER Externally… snip…

Neal was proud of his team. Not only were they working together in a unified unit, they were doing rather well at it. He wasn’t sure if he had seen any sort of action with the Vanguard as of yet. Agni considering himself a leader of sort, he was a lot more reserved and contemplated.

He watched as Team Paragon formulated their attack against the giant robot. With the coordinated attacks from Paragon Gambit and Hellion and Moonstar of Team Vanguard; the pilot had taken quite the beating. Much so, it caused the robot to lurch forward directly towards the two teams.

Since Agni was airborne, he focused an intensive blast on the cockpit of the robot. Lashing out with a jetted napalm of plasma, Agni focused on the cockpit of the robotic adversary. Each tendril of super heated plasmatic energy lashed itself on whatever armor was protecting the pilot. Never ceasing his attack, he focused on a rain of plasma showers spreading forth against any weakened armor.

~*~ Assist me Hellion, we need to push him back. ~*~ Agni responded through Psyche’s link. He fired his plasma bolts again, still not wavering from his focus on the pilot house of their robotic menace.

PSYLOCKE: AGNI: ~*~ Greetings Elizabeth, may Ganesh smile luckily upon your team as well. I believe I’d love to eat something Mexican this evening. ~*~

Elisabeth grinned. Her eyes flashed with the hint of amusement, and she telepathically replied, ~*~ I was thinking Greek, or perhaps Thai… ~*~ Yup, she was up for a challenge, and it seemed that he was too.

In fact, Agni led his team into the Danger Room before Psylocke had been able to. However, she was confident that his team's lead would soon be caught up. Betsy was confident in team Vanguard.

LASER: "My shields aren't all that large, and take a lot of concentration to hold. I can't push them too far away from me yet either. But, if Moonstar and I can find a vantage point, I can take shots at the Big Bad and Moonstar can scare the hell out of it at a distance. Then I can be close enough to keep her under shield." He shrugged again, "Let me know. We can a;ways adapt on the fly."

Psylocke smiled and nodded her head once in the affirmative. "Precisely what I had in mind, Laser."

Powerhouse had pointed out that perhaps it would be better for the two teams to work together to achieve their goal. Perhaps he was right… It was a strange concept, though. And, if he was right, Bee shouldn't have turned down Psyche's generous offer to min-like both teams for this exercise.

Wisdom rudely started barking out orders; however, what he suggested sounded… good. Solid. Like it would work. Bee nodded, and they all headed into the Danger Room.

Psylocke approached slowly, keeping back away from the fray and using her telepathic powers to 'feel out' for any other civilians in need of saving, other than the ones on the bus - it seemed that the other team had the bus people handled. Odds were, there were more people out here…

HELLION: Julian pumped his arm victoriously as he saw the rocket swerve out of control and go off into a newsstand.

“Hah- you can thank me later,” he muttered to himself, smirking. He could only imagine how the Canadian would feel about having been ‘saved’ by the likes of Julian… Though, to be fair, the saving was only half-done. With a second rocket chasing after the speedster, he was still very much in trouble. The number of rockets was hardly relevant- as long as it was more than zero, it was too many.

Before he could scan the scene and deal with the other rocket, he found himself confronted by a much more immediate issue- the mech pilot that had been terrified by Moonstar had started up in a charge, direction towards the group of people he was a part of. In truth, it wasn’t too big a deal in itself- he could up and away at any second and dodge that hulking sloth… but Julian was standing between that thing and the bus… if they wanted to save those citizens and win this thing, he’d need a new plan.

An answer came in the form of fiery plasma beams raining down from above. They pelted into the mech as it continued it charge, and Julian was visited by Agni’s voice.

~*~ Assist me Hellion, we need to push him back. ~*~

He winced- they definitely needed to have a chat about this whole broadcasting-into-your-head thing. Not that he had any secrets to hide… but the intrusive nature of it all… what if he needed to think?

~*~Push him back?~*~ Julian thought back, assuming that the nature of the link was two-way, ~*~I want this thing down for the count!~*~ As he sent the thought, Julian threw out his arms, directing his attention at the Mech’s legs.

Walking was nothing more than repeated, controlled falling. You fall forward, catch yourself with a leg, lift yourself up, and do it all again. When there wasn’t a leg there to catch you, though, you just stayed at the first step- you fell.

With that in mind, he tried to wrap his telekinetic control around the machine’s legs and, with a wide, sweeping motion, pull them out from under it.

INKLING: As the flailing Mech flailed, charging forward with the panicking pilot inside, Agni cast a sheathing downward blast over it… bathing it in plasma fire and starting its imminent downfall with the ignition of several power cells under the targeted armor plating… the plates blew off in a frenzied outward path, exposing the core support structure underneath on several spots.

Hellion’s additional follow-up to the things legs brought a resounding, metallic CRACKKK! from the back-angled dog-legged design… with the main hydraulics assemblies collapsing in a green flaring light as Hellion ‘swept’ the legs back and apart, the Mech could no longer drive its leg forward… and the heavy upper section hit the pavement with a skidding crash….

The whole smoking assemblage came to a grinding, smoking, spark-thrown halt a mere 10 feet from the Vanguard squad. It might do well for them to note there was still a larger Mech still in the distance, as Wisdom had suggested Powerhouse and Chamber go after.

Psylocke’s scans revealed more than 30 bystanders around the street, hiding in various points of cover, over triple the number of those she could ‘sense’ from the bus, but decentralized in locations… they were scattered and afraid to come out for fear of being hurt. Inkling was the only non-artificial ‘signal’ Psylocke could sense inside the bus, and the other 10, like the bystanders and mech pilots, being essentially fabricated, recordings of brain-wave transmissions for the benefit of psionics-users in the DR.

~~Meanwhile, back at the bus…~~

The busting-through of the window by Rockslide met with a few instinctual sounds of alarm from those inside, but Whisper’s ability kept their overall response set to ‘calm’ more or less.

Marina heard him call in after clearing the window… She moved toward the front, and was about to respond to guide groups of 2 to the South “safe zone” of the Bus Station in sight, that had been identified earlier by Agni… She never got the chance…

“Next, Rocky?… ” The Lavender Lass squeaked shakily, with her coal-black eyes going wide… “…ummm… lessee here…” she gulped loudly…

…But they weren’t looking at Rockslide… she was focused behind him… upon the extremely large arm of the 2nd Mech…. levelling the business end of the Concussion Cannon at Rockslide’s back as he faced the bus…

“Next… we… all… DUCK!!!!” Marina dove back into the bus… Dive-tackling him backward wouldv’e done her no good on someone his size… he’d be simply too large and bulky for Marain move… and if she tried, it was far more likely she’d resemble a purple super-ball, bouncing off his chest after ineffectual impact. There was nothing she could do but try to warn Rockslide and try to help keep the people in the bus out of the line of fire for now…

CHAMBER: Moonstar had thought to attack the pilot directly, and although Jono likewise contemplated releasing a mental blast and trying to render the fucker unconscious, he decided against it for two reasons. First off, he didn't want to in any way interfere with what Danielle was attempting, and secondly, he wasn't sure his control was good enough to avoid also putting his classmates and the many civilians in the area in the line of fire as well.

Fair enough then, going after the big metal beasties with simple brute force seemed like the only other option. Wisdom stated what Chamber was already thinking – simply blast the thing with everything he had. It was necessary, however, for Jono to wait until he was sure he had a clear shot at the mech, concerned about accidentally hitting any of the others who might presently be launching their own attacks against the opponent.

Pale fingers unwound the bandages from around his face and chest, and he tried to ignore the reaction of any bystanders who might catch a glimpse of his rather horrifying appearance. Waiting … waiting … waiting … NOW! Chamber saw his opening, and took it, unleashing the full concussive force of the psionic energy furnace roiling inside his torso. The red and gold flame-like energy burst forward to strike at the first, larger mech. His intent was to do much the same as Hellion had managed with the first, and simply blast the thing's legs out from beneath it, causing it to topple and crash.

NORTHSTAR: Inwardly, Northstar was reciting some of the most vehement curses he knew, as he realized that his plan to draw the walker's attention had perhaps worked a little too well. The thing had fired upon him, and as the missiles proceeded to follow his trajectory, the speedster realized they were equipped with tracking technology. As he put on an added burst of speed, trying to stay ahead of the pursuing weapons, and diving and turning in his attempts to shake his tail, he noted that one of them had begun to glow green, before veering wildly off-course and crashing into the ground, prompting a sizeable and powerful explosion. Ah, oui, definitely better if the second didn't hit him then.

Jean-Paul recalled the shame and frustration he'd faced against Pierce's sentinels, when he'd not been quick enough to avoid taking a hit. Perhaps this time, he could still salvage his pride, and turn the situation in his favour. The Canadian proceeded to streak towards the second, larger mechanized enemy. He kept his altitude high, as though intending to soar well above it; however, at the very last moment, he chose to take a steep dive, and went just underneath the mech's belly – so close as to all but scrape the paint off its armour, then emerged on the other side. If his plan worked, the missile following him would not be able to correct its course with quite as much speed and agility, and would end up exploding its partner in crime …

ROCKSLIDE: It took a second to process what Inkling meant, but a quick 180 revealed it all.

"Aw… fuck," he cursed, looking down the barrel of the cannon that would surely reduce him to powder if he got hit with it.

It was time for some quick thinking, as Rockslide could hear the whine of the concussive engine rearing to fire.

Frantically, he searched around him for something… anything, he could use to do… well, something. Another car to shield with. Something to shove up the barrel of the cannon to reverse the blast. He was a sitting duck here-- too slow to dodge, but he couldn't risk letting the blast hit the bus full of people, either…

Suddenly, the side of the Mech was bombarded by dazzling flames, as if Heaven heard of Rockslide's predicament and sent down its fiery wrath of cleansing, however oxymoronic that sounded.

Anyway… that took care of that problem. Rockslide was sure he wasn't going to be the Mech's target of affection anymore. He'd have to thank whoever did that; later, though, once they were all not all trying to be killed, and stuff.

Rockslide turned back to the bus, and approached Inkling.

"How're we doing this?" he asked, meaning getting all the people to safety. He couldn't think of a simple plan, honestly, and he wasn't sure he could even come up with one. Rockslide was the solider, not the commander. He'd leave the planning to the deputy.

OOC: asked MILLER re: the mech's aim-- it's no longer on Rockslide

Tags: CHAMBER, INKLING

INKLING: The Mech had Santo dead to rights…one pull of the trigger and Rockslide would be imbedded into the bus or better yet blown straight through it… The pilot’s teeth set into a grim smile… and…

An arcing tumult of flaring psionic force slammed into the larger Mech’s left leg, throwing its aim wide, and canceling the shot. The pilot cursed loudly in the cockpit, searching for the cause, and found Chamber, immediately trying to switch the target lock to Jono instead… Ranged attack being the bigger strategic threat, logically…

The Pilot had just gotten the re-engagement signal when a flying…. blur approached and too a swift down-turn in mid-flight.

.765 seconds later, the smoky vapor trail of the homing Missile took up space of where the ‘blur’ had first changed course… but the missile.. did not…

SkkkkrrrraaaBOOOOOOOOOM!

A direct explosive strike to the massive mid-section drove the mechanized monstrosity backward, embedding it into the building behind it over the first 2 ½ stories over street level… Very shortly it would undoubtedly be trying to extricate itself, an due to it’s size, made it also likely more damage would be needed than it took to fell it’s smaller ‘brother’ unit…

~~Meanwhile, back at the bus…~~

Marina shivered slight… Dammit, Rockslide was gonna get hammered and there was not a thing she could do about it. An afterthought, more like a hypothetical running its formulaic sequence in her imagination, of a repeat of the ‘purple water balloon’ maneuver, resulted in another disappointment. Even if Santo had somehow been able to fling her up to the pilot’s cockpit window to block his sight-line…. She’d never reach it in time…

Waiting… more waiting… nothing … A single tendril of her ‘hair’ went upward, flipping left, right, and forward like a thin purple periscope… the a cautious pair of full ebon eyes peeked over the cover of the seats.

“Where’s the kaboom? There was supposed to be a Rockslide-shattering kaboom… godsthatsoundedbetterinmyhead…” She slapped a purple palm across her forehead, parting the fingers slightly. “Rocky? Ya still there buddy?”

A moment later his gravely voice filtered in, after the only slightly more distant sound of… explosions… oh peachy… Rockslide was asking for a plan… okay… right… thinkthinkthink…

“You see that SUV next to you? Tear the roof off from the part where the windows start from the door… and flip it over… We need to transport more than 1 at a time, fast, right? Okay… We’re making a sled to take several at one time over…”

CYCLOPS: Cyclops sat in the DR control booth looking at the teams perform on the half a dozen monitors that lay scattered before him. He was glad to see Jeannie had finally arrived to show up… even if she was late.

Yet, despite all of this, Team Paragon was certainly ahead in points compared to his own Team. Doing his best to hide the disappointment, Scott only hoped that Psylocke could pull them together and get them focused.

Rockslide, Inkling and Hellion were performing really well. With Rock and Hel being new students to the veterans of Team Paragon. Even if the two mutants had a rough start at the Institute, their rivalry was put aside as the two seemed very focused at the goal at hand.

Even if his Team wasn’t performing well, at least the rest of the students within the exercise was going great. The Danger Room provided great camera angles allowing Cyke to record the battle for future reference and some training courses on team work with his own team. Obviously Vanguard needed some extra homework on the subject.

Cyclops would have to schedule more sessions for Team Vanguard, hoping to get them to mesh as a team. He didn’t fully blame Psylocke for the current team point standing, since she hadn’t really had any source of field experience like the Paragon’s veterans. That’s something that would come over time and experience.

When Wisdom shouted out orders, he wondered if the Brit had stepped over the line, but Cyke remembered that someone of Wisdom’s background explain why he had acted out instead of offer suggestions.

Never-the-less, Psylocke was the leader, and the way she responded had gained her extra points in his book. Arguing during combat was never a good idea and something not tolerated in Cyke’s book. He was glad to see that the Brit Telepath had taken the high road with Wisdom’s suggestion.

[Psylocke, remember focus on the objectives. Even if the mechs are neutralized there is still a burning building and bystanders to save.] Cyclops responded in the Vanguard’s comms.

Cyke wanted to give her a focus and get her head back in the game. He liked Bee, and was happy to see that she had made his team. With her abilities, the girl had a lot of potential to be an amazing Team Leader. Now only if his confidence in her abilities will help Team Vanguard come on top… that was all up to her.

ROCKSLIDE: [INKLING: “You see that SUV next to you?]…

Rockslide turned to his right, and saw another SUV like the one that almost decapitated him earlier. It, like pretty much everything around here, was beat up pretty bad. Ripping off the roof shouldn't be too much of a challenge.

"Right," Rockslide affirmed, and jumped over to the truck. With an elbow, Rockslide smashed out the front window of the SUV, making it easier for him to grip the underside of the roof.

He hopped onto the hood, leaving two dents where he landed, and grabbed the roof. With a mighty heave and grunt, Rockslide tore off the front end of the roof, ripping the metal from the frame. He next hopped inside the vehicle, and pounded the rest of it out. Eventually, the roof was loose enough to rip off entirely, and Rockslide tossed it upside-down in front of the bus.

He smiled at his handiwork, but had another idea.

"Couldn't Hellion and I just push the whole bus?" he suggested. "He'll use his mind-fuck on it to lift it up a few so it'd be easier than pushing it along the ground."

Rockslide looked over to where his buddy was fighting the other mech. "Unless he's busy… " He looked back to Inkling for her input.

GAMBIT: Gambit was already on the move when the mech began to blow apart. He had managed to gain cover behind a toppled min-van, and thus managed to miss taking any damage from the shrapnel and debris.

Looking around, he saw another problem. A neearby building had caught fire, whether from the explosion of flames or from before the robot he didn't know. Either way, he could hear the screams of those trapped inside.

"Mes amis, we have another problem," Gambit yelled out, heading toward the building. "People trapped inside." He moved toward the flaming structure, looking for a safe entrance point. Not finding one, he dedcided to make his own.

A pair of cards slipped between his fingers as gambit charged them and let them fly into the footing of a window. The window and accompanying wall blew out, making an entrance. Flames licked around it, but there was more room to get in than where the front door stood.

Without waiting for backup, Gambit leapt through the entrance he made. Pulling his jacket collar up, Gambut pulled one side over his mouth and held it there as he began to explore, filtering the smoke and heat through the collar's fabric.

LASER: Whatever they did must have worked. The mech exploded in a rain of flaming shrapnel. Concentrating, Laser quickly brought up a translucent gold shield around himself, Moonstar, and several feet around them. Panic and adrenaline puched the shield larger than he had done before, and adrenaline and concentration held it in place against the heavy impact of metal. He could feel the pressure on the outside of the shield as pieces of mech bounced off it.

Knowing his teammate's life depended on him, Laser held the shield, ignoring the headache beginning to form behind his eyes. he knew he made it too big but didn't know how to shrink it without dropping the shield, which wasn't an option at the moment. I need to react better, he though to himself, as flaming metalrained down on them. Much much MUCH better.

When the impacts stopped, Laser let the shield fall, then dropped to one knee. "Get to cover," he gasped at Moonstar. "I need a moment to recover and wont be able to do that again so soon." Somewhere around them he heard another explosion. "And they'll need you to do your trick again when we take on the Big Bad."

WILD CHILD: The doors to the danger room had opened up, and the sight was definitely more than what was expected. The burning building, the overturned bus, the two mechs that were rampaging around…all seemed a little more than he had ever been prepared for. However, he knew this was all part of the test. He knew this was something that they would all have to work together on, and they would have to utilize their skills and prioritize things. First thing on his mind was to neutralize the threat, but seeing that they were composed of metal, it would be hard for him to inflict adequate damage alone. So he decided that his role would function best as a decoy to draw their attention and allow the others to do their part, or he would have to stick to strictly search and rescue.

The teams jumped into the action without hesitation, quickly downing the smaller mech for the time being. The others put a focus on rescuing the trapped civilians, as the mutants with the long range capabilities went into action against the larger mechanical monstrosity. Seeing an area to help the others, Kyle rushed towards the civilians, hoping that he would be able to pull some of them to safety.

PSYLOCKE: "Wild Child… Please use your abilities to locate people and urge them to get out of here and go to the Bank. I will do the same," Psylocke instructed, as Wisdom had earlier suggested that she and Wild Child focus on the rescue aspect of this training exercise. "It feels like there are about thirty people out here, save for the ten on that bus… "

CYCLOPS: [Psylocke, remember to focus on the objectives. Even if the mechs are neutralized, there is still a burning building and bystanders to save.]

Betsy nodded, a hard look on her face. She had been concentrating so hard on telepathically locating people and one by one gently planting a telepathic suggestion to please relocate themselves in an organized fashion, and go north-ward, to the nearby Bank - her team's designated Safe Area.

Psylocke scolded herself for not paying more attention to the rest of her team - she was their leader, and she needed to make sure they were working efficiently and that everyone's talents were being best utilized.

~*~ I'm on it, Cyclops - I have a plan… ~*~ Psylocke 'pathed directly back to Scott, on a private line, so to speak. She wanted badly to impress him, and from his message to her, he wasn't quite thrilled with their team's performance - at least, that's what Bee had surmised.

Psylocke watched the first mech fall, while she scanned the area for citizens to save. She spoke into her comm, reaching her entire team, and perhaps even the other team as well, and said, "Way to go, everyone! One down, one to go… "

It had been felled by members of both teams, but despite that, it was worth some cheering and acknowledgment.

"Now, may I please have someone, or a few 'someones', focus on that burning building, over there? I feel that these 'citizens' may feel more calm and be easier to work with if that massive fire were put out… "

"And then, regardless of who's team you're on, everyone who's not focusing on that second mech or the fire, it would be advisable to get to saving people and bringing them to our designated Safe Areas. Now, let's get this done so I won't be late for Tea," she joked, trying to sound encouraging. She ended the transmission with, "Psylocke out."

WISDOM: [PSYLOCKE]"Now, may I please have someone, or a few 'someones', focus on that burning building, over there? I feel that these 'citizens' may feel more calm and be easier to work with if that massive fire were put out… "

Pete Wisdom was happy to hear Betsy taking charge of the situation. After a moment of indecision, she’d stepped up and done what he knew she was able to do quite well, take charge of the teams. It hadn’t been his desire to kick her aside or step on toes, but sometimes it was necessary to behave like a Sergeant Major and kick everyone into gear.

[PSYLOCKE]"And then, regardless of who's team you're on, everyone who's not focusing on that second mech or the fire, it would be advisable to get to saving people and bringing them to our designated Safe Areas. Now, let's get this done so I won't be late for Tea," she joked, trying to sound encouraging. She ended the transmission with, "Psylocke out."

*Well done, luv.* Wisdom thought as he moved into the burning building to help the rescues. She’d stepped up and he could happily go back to just helping out. This definitely wasn’t where he would be of great use, beyond as simple assistance. He knew his skill lay in less savory situations…

INKLING: Plentiful smoke and some minor waves of heat surrounded Gambit as he scanned the building interior, which he discovered was a lingerie shop. A pair of rear exit doors at the far side of the room could be seen from where he was, but no one appeared to be using them, as the flames licked up the wall around them. The street ‘exit’ he’d created seemed to be the only way out, although other shops on this floor might have their own entrances. What did strike his attention was a group of 3 women huddled together close to the floor, and holding garments over their mouths and noses to block the smoke. A pretty brunette looked plaintively to him with a confused desperation, as did the other women just behind her. They scuttled toward Gambit en masse.

From where Wisdom was, the curls of smoke weren’t inhibiting his breath, but were still thick, and clinging close to the ceiling. A small clutch of 2 men and a woman holding her son close to her hip where peering out trying to figure a route to safety. “Can’t see a damn thing.. is that the way out?” she called to him. A sign on a door read’ Stairs’ next to an elevator, probably leading to access to the building’s upper floors.

Wild Child found a group of 3 men bracing themselves in the relative cover of a building façade’s alcove. 2 more were hiding around the corner in an alley within 10 feet of Kyle, and trying to figure out the next place to run to get away.

Psyche looked to the environment closely. As the Advisor for her Squad, she considered the Paragons first, but as a point of ‘playing fair’ the need seemed pressing to note the presence to all by a telepathic transmission, and informing Psylocke and Agni first, then the rest, of a Fire Hydrant planted squarely in the sidewalk, approximately mid-point of the front of the building that was on fire. People could be led individually, or in groups… but it did no one any good if those they wished to save burnt up or choked to death from smoke either. If the water could somehow be released from the hydrant and then gathered or redirected, it might help quench the flames. She was being cautious about providing too much guidance. Scott had taken a purely ‘observation’ stance, and was not on the DR floor after all… and the Paragons were doing very well on their own accord, so she was inclined to watch further and see who might benefit from particular control training to hone their own skills individually as well… at least for now.

~~At the bus:

“Push… the… whole… bus…” Marina winced and planted a purple palm firmly to her forehead, “…I gotta stop thinking small… Rocky, that’s brilliant… Yes! …If it’s possible.” Marina slapped the Comm-link to her team, even though addressing mainly Julian.

“HELLION… How much can you move at once? I’m only used to TK’s with focus on smaller objects.. so I got no clue. Rocky wants to move the whole bus to the Paragons Safe Zone… South… the bus station? The people IN the bus, once out, are taken care of… and It also occurs to me an object this big can be visual cover for any other bystanders hiding behind, if we can guide them to it after that…”

Marina moved closer to Rockslide, once again peeking out from the cleared window-space in the bus front. “Hold off on the sled, Rocky… if this works, we get all ten at once…”

HELLION: The rush of adrenaline was enough to make all of Julian tense. The combined force of Agni’s torrent of strange, plasma-like fire and the telekinetic’s own assault had done it- the mech went down with a resounding crash, struck out, and down for the count. Julian could hardly contain himself-

“Yeah!” he called out, “Now that’s what I’m talkin’ about!” If there were someone within arms-reach of him, he’d have given them a vigorous high-five. This was fantastic- not only was he up against impossible odds, but he was surmounting them. It was so much more than anything else he’d done before… sure, he’d gotten past difficulties in the past… but that was hardly a real challenge when you had all the resources in the world. Here, none of that helped, none of that mattered… it was Julian Keller against the world, and he was kicking ass.

An explosion drew his attention as the second mech was thrown violently into a building. There was a scutter of motion, and the other team mobilized, no doubt an attempt to avoid missing out on a chance to ‘catch up’. Julian smirked to himself as he took a step forward- he couldn’t let them do that, now, could he?

Before he could lift off and throw himself back into the fray, though, there was a sound he’d been told to recognize- it was a small device located safely in one of the inner pockets of his jacket. It was connected wirelessly to an earpiece.

“HELLION… How much can you move at once?”

“Not sure-” he called out over the din of the scene, “Never had a reason to find that limit-” The next part of her transmission left him slack-jawed. Move the bus- that was Santo’s amazing plan? What did they think he was, a goddamn industrial crane? He almost wanted to just go off and fight the other robot… before he remembered what this exercise was called. Save the Citizen- that was their main priority… or it was supposed to be, anyway. Taking one last, almost longing look at the remaining mech, Julian lifted himself off the ground in the other direction. Glowing like a beacon, he approached the bus.

“Alright, so you want me,” he said, gesturing towards himself, “To lift that?” He eyed the wreckage- shattered glass everywhere, a few pieces of metal twisted beyond all recognition and strewn across the ground… His assessment: it was pretty damn big, and pretty damn broken.

“Fine,” he said as he cracked his knuckles, “but you guys have to cover me…” Though some thought that it would be ‘easy’, Julian had learned first hand not to try mixing flight with other uses of his powers… for whatever reason, he could only ever maintain one at a time, meaning that A) he would fall or B) the bus-full of people would come to the ground. Neither sounded good.

Julian took a breath, and reached out with his arms, directing his powers at the wreckage.

“Hold on tight-” he muttered as he entire bus started to glow a dim green. It twitched slightly. The glow surrounding Julian intensified, as did the one in his eyes and the one smothering the bus. The vehicle extricated itself from the rest of the wreckage from the crash and gently inched upwards- off the ground. Both hands ‘holding’ the bus up, Julian lifted it higher and higher until it was hovering a good ten feet above the ground.

“Alright, make way- party bus coming through!”

ROCKSLIDE: Rockslide took a few steps back as the bus was bathed in a green aura, characteristic of Hellion's power.

"Keep it up Hellion!" he shouted over the noise, watching the transportation vehicle rise above the destruction.

Rockslide looked to his left, and saw the larger mech trying to remove itself from the building it was embedded in.

"Shit," he cursed. If that thing got free, it would surely go after the glowing green beacon that was his friend. Hellion was an open target now-- he probably had all his concentration on bus, vulnerable to anything that came by. One hit and he'd be down for sure, not to mention the bus would come crashing back to Earth, potentially causing more destruction, and even worse to think what would happen to the passengers and Inkling from the fall…

Rockslide looked down at the makeshift sled he'd ripped from the SUV-- it could function as a shield, but the metal was way too thin to stop a rocket or concussion blast. No… it probably wouldn't do. Besides, it'd be awkward to hold. He'd have to find something else, and if not, hope no concussion blasts were going blow him to bits.

"Ink! I'ma help Hellion!" he called to the girl, and ran over to do just that.

He approached Hellion, and circled around to his back, unsure if he'd disrupt his connection with the bus if he stood in front of him.

"I gotcha bud," he reassured the glowing telekinetic, and clenched two fists, ready to punch away anything that came near them.
