G: Capture the Flag

BEAST: Per Professor Xavier’s guidance, and the voicing of several to increase the opportunities to gain control of their abilities, the students were made mutually aware via Email and posted notices of Training Squad assignments. The 1st of 3 DR sessions awaited the new Squads.

The readout screen just outside the DR chamber in the Ready Room displayed the instructions:

Please enter immediately and join your respective squad group in your ‘Home-base’, according to the glowing arrows on the floor to designate which; Red for Team 1[Excalibur], Blue for Team 2[Mavericks]. An alert signal will be given when the exercise begins, so please wait with your respective group until that time. Using the wait-time for group strategizing is highly encouraged.

Goals:

Teams must obtain the opposing team’s ‘Flag’ Beacon, return with it to their ‘home base’, and secure it into a receptacle to have it count as ‘captured’. Upon being so registered, the captured Beacon will automatically reset to its respective ‘Home-base’ of origin; Beacons still in transit are not reset until placement, or else returned by their defending original ‘owner’ squad.

Note: The mutual success of one’s team is the main goal, but improvisation is not disallowed. Teams are encouraged the to follow the guidance of their Advisors, Deputy Leaders, as well as their team mates, so please communicate with each other effectively when needed.

~~INSIDE The Danger Room~~

The entering point to the DR brought them into a south-most mid-point… once inside, there stretched out an industrial warehouse district. On each far end of the 300 yard long, 50 yard wide space, on a West-East orientation was each respective team’s ‘Home-base’ building. Windows gave several angles of vision both out and in… A pair of tall, vertical, upward-sliding doors encompassed the middle of opposing walls as exit points. Inside each Home-base rested a thick circular base centrally located on the floor, with a single Flag Beacon attached to a 4 foot long staff sticking directly vertical and blinking softly; Red for Team 1[Excalibur], Blue for Team 2[Mavericks]. A separate insertion notch was available at the front of the base, to register a ‘captured’ enemy Beacon.

In the 250 yards separating the two Home-bases, there were 2 rows of large storage-style warehouses of similar construction the Home-bases but empty to act as cover, oriented 1 north and 1 south to either each side of an open ‘center row’ area, down which one ‘Home base’ had direct line of sight to the other…. the intervening buildings looked like quite effective ‘cover’ if decided to be used as such.

Around the storage buildings, as well, were placed various barrels, tall crates, pallet stacks, motorized but for now inert forklifts, pallet jacks, and many other such items to be used as additional cover, or, for the inventive, a means of defense or attack against the opposing team… It all depended how improvisational one might feel, if the participants saw a use for something. Some of the Barrels were full of water, and plentiful clumped growths of climbing vines went up several buildings that looked strong enough to support an average-weight human.

In the Mavericks’ Home-Base building, Beast was heard… counting…

“…143… 144… 145…” Hank’s voice issued out into the warehouse-space with a slight echo, latched by his toes pointed up and holding himself to one of the walls’ welded support frame. He was drawing his entire massive frame up from an upside down hanging orientation, curling up with his arms behind his head and touching his chin to his knees, azure fur fluttering lightly to and fro…. and continued counting, until people began arriving. “…146.. 147.. 148… 149… 150.. 151…”

In the opposing side’s Home-base Emma gave a derisive look to the warehouse, hoping for something less pedestrian that an onslaught of stylized ninja out of ‘Kill Bill”, or the tedium of thousands of feudal Japanese warriors per Logan’s blood-sport version of ‘Ran’.

She muttered cooly, tapping a thumb across her custom-fashioned chronometer. “Tick tock… one must be punctual for dispensing wrath…”

TALON: Kirika walked through the Danger room in her black Standard X-Uniform with silver piping. With the adjustable harness having pockets and attachment points for her various weapons and equipment such as smoke pellets, and many different weapons, what ever she could strap to herself out of her arsenal of weapons from home, though she likely would just leave them in the Home-Base building, she was still prepared as she inspected the area.

With each step she took she scanned the area, getting the scents of whomever was there already, having her hair up and pinning back so it would not get in the way was a must for this exercise. So far in the Danger room their were two distinct scents. Kirika inspected the area that one needed to make it to get to the other side, took in the obstacles and the various perceived problems they could run into and projected a time to get from point a to point b before she walked into the Mavericks’ Home-Base building.

She heard the Beast counting she could smell the start of him sweating as she walked in on him exercising. Seeing him clenching the support beam with his feet as he was lifting his torso to skyward. She did not interrupt him, as he would not interrupt her during a training regimen. She just sat down on the ground and folded her legs, and placed her hands on each knee and closed her eyes and listened to everything around her, taking in all sounds and scents.

MAREMOTO: As he stepped into the Danger Room wearing the uniform leathers he was given soon after his arrival, a standard short-sleeved black set without the gloves (he didn't like having things on his hands), mixed feelings battled inside his mind. Only a couple weeks and already he was signed up for training. One side of Paz was nervous, and understandably so. He'd never experienced something like this. Hell, how could he, anyway? Puerto Rico sure didn't have a set up anything near like the Institute. Xavier Institute was nothing like he'd ever encountered before-- he couldn't believe he could call this place home, it was so amazing.

The other side of him was excited: excited to be able to try out his powers in a fight. And Paz always did love a good challenge, even if he was still fresh with his powers. He'd practiced a bit in the pool, making streams of water curl in the air. It shouldn't be too unnatural to figure out on the spot other ways to make the water move.

As Paz entered the scene, he spotted he was the first one here. Which was what he wanted-- make a good impression on his advisor by being on time. He was the new kid here, and on top of that, a foreign new kid. He had to form good first impressions with everyone to accept him if he truly wanted to be able to call this place home.

Paz noticed the indications for the Mavericks' side, and followed its lead towards one end of the Danger Room where a great warehouse stood, his team's home-base.

The sound of the door opening as Paz entered echoed through the near empty warehouse, save for the construct in the middle where the flag stood. Paz could, however, hear the gruff voice of someone counting.

"Mr. McCoy?" he asked, his voice joining the man's bouncing off the walls.

JUBILEE: Dressed in her X-man uniform, which was specially tailored to withstand her power and allow much flexibility for her to do her gymnast moves, Jubilee came skating into the danger room ready to kick some butt. She had a pair of shoes with her, should her team leaders tell her to Eighty-Six the skates, but she hoped they would allow her to use them, the skates, during the Danger Room Scenario. It was capture the flag after all. How much work would she be doing, other than going from one side of the building, to the other- hopefully with the flag in hand to win her team a point!

"What'up homies? Jubes in da house, and ready for some action. LET'S GET THIS PARTY STARTED!!!" The firecracker shouted, hoping to get all attention directed on her. She heard Beast counting, but she did not pay much attention to it, as she had no clue why he was counting in the first place. So, pulling out her iPod Jubilee settled it to P!nks 'Get The Party Started'; one ear plug tightly and comfortably set in her left ear, while the other dangled by her chest. She did this so she could listen to some music, while also listening for any directions her team leaders would suggest she make. She was pumped and could not wait for the scenario to start.

She scanned the area for a while to take in the scenery of which she was going to have to play a game in. It looked so cool! It was a HUGE warehouse, in which she would get to play such a popular and fun game of Capture the flag in. It was like every kids dream to play a game in such a big place, with all the possibilities limitless to ones imagination. One could run and hide, use the obstacles within the warehouse to his or her advantage, to get to the other teams flag being undetected. Jubilee was in heaven. Her skills at hiding would so come into play during this danger room course! She so could not wait for the game to start.

"Hey, Kiri" Jubilee greeted her friend with a wide smile, coming up to stand by her. She looked down at the Feral mutant for a second, before sitting down on the floor next to Kiri, herself. "You meditating or something?"

BEAST: “197… 198.. 199.. 200.” Hank hung, in-curled and for the moment upright allowed his muscles to set the pressure rendered.

3 so far behind him in the Mavericks’ Home-base space… Hank could hear their respective entry via the steps’ echoes, or the shifting sweep of wheels in the latter-most case… some intake of scents to distinguish position behind as he finished limbering up. Kirika’s controlled steps settled in with a distinct precision.

Hank had begun formulating his functional input even before he’d arrived and reviewed the capabilities of those on the Mavericks. The personal goal for himself was applying guidance within their actual ability. Pressing themselves beyond what they thought they could do was in mind, but for those who might be struggling with control, Hank was keeping those factors in mind as well.

Paz’ voice came up, and Hank hung backbward, relaxing to his original upside-down position, still latched by his toe-hold to the wall beam. A pair of feline, gold-rimmed irises set to Paz.

“Ah… Mr. Estrada… good of you to join us so punctually. It’s appreciated.”

“If you wouldn’t mind a bit of formality, we’d like people to get used to using their Codenames actively. It helps if we have to communicate in the field. Outside of the Danger Room, in the mansion as well…” Hank settled one wide hand to the ground and disengaged his toe-hold, giving a shove off the floor and bouncing backward into a crouch next to Talon. “You may call me Hank if you wish. Here in the ‘DR’, and on missions, call me Beast.”

He drew a clawed index finger to Kiri and Jubes, “Talon… and Jubilee, respectively. Ladies… this is Maremoto.”

Hank looked out the open warehouse door, and noted to Paz, “If you would, while we’re waiting, survey the environment from here for water sources you can use. Set their locations in your memory. You never know when they might come in handy for keeping our honorable opponents busy… in either offense, defense, or distraction.”

“Talon, I trust you’re considering how to get a tactical position established. Mayhaps you’ve some suggestions in that regard?”

Hank’s eyes set to Jubilee, then the skates. “I can understand the functional mobility, indeed. I would suggest though, if you wish to guarantee your footing, especially if you become a stationary target… by some minor miracle of their aim, no doubt, considering your alacrity… the footwear may be a better choice. I would imagine it might be difficult to climb through a window or up a wall to sneak around their line of sight with wheels besetting one’s feet, but since I can’t wear them, I’m hardly the expert in that case… and that out there?" A thumb-claw was cast over his shoulder to the intervening terrain between the two home-bases.

“That is an awfully lot of ground to cover to get to Excalibur’s Flag Beacon, and get back here to account with. Any ideas on how to approach? We should keep all our options open if possible… if I know Emma on the other team, she’ll be expecting at least 1 offensive plan… but if we shift the plan, our chances increase exponentially…”

MAREMOTO: "Oh… claro-" wait, wait, that was wrong; "..ahh, yo… no, I-… I understand," he finally manged to stutter out, but not before turning red in the face.

Only having been in the States for a couple weeks, Paz hadn't gotten entirely used to speaking in English all the time. It wasn't that he didn't understand the language, it was the second language of Puerto Rico what with the tourists and the proximity to the State, so he'd grown up around it and had learned it in school for the better of five years. It was just habit to speak in Spanish as the native tongue and first language, like most locals. Hopefully the total immersion in English would push it out of him.

He still had his accent though. Paz hoped it wouldn't make people form impressions about his English. He knew Hispanics didn't have too great of a reputation up here.

Paz smiled as Beast introduced him to the two other girls. One, because it was nice to smile when meeting someone new; two, because he didn't have to introduce himself on his own now; and three, because Beast had pronounced his codename correctly.

At first he thought nothing of it, but now Paz was having second thoughts about choosing a Spanish-origin codename. Maremoto meant 'tidal wave', so he thought that was cool and appropriate. But then as he came to the States, Paz realized a lot of people were gringos, or people who couldn't speak Spanish to survive. They butchered his name, making it sound like nails on a chalkboard to him. Maremoto. Open vowel sounds. Roll the 'r' a bit. The tongue touches the back of the front teeth for the 't' sound, not the roof like in English. It's a Spanish name, so say it with the accent. Paz didn't think it'd be so difficult for some to grasp.

Not to mention his legal name too. 'Pahzs'. Not the candy Pez with an 'a'. That was going to take some work to get people to say right.

[BEAST]: “If you would, while we’re waiting, survey the environment from here for water sources you can use… "

"Yessir," Paz responded, and proceeded to go do just that, glad to leave everyone's presence for now until his embarrassment from his Spanglish subsided.

TALON: Talon sat in the quiet, save for Beasts counting and the stretching of his muscles, the sounds of the very tendons moving with each and every exertion of his muscular frame. Then came the break in the silence the creaking of the door to their warehouse home-base and the foot falls of another team member, his distinct scent filling the air as he approached and spoke only to Beast. Likely not noticing Talon herself. Which was of course fine by her, more time to mediate and prepare for the forth coming battle.

She just sat there and continued to listen to everything around her, the flowing water, the smell the Danger Room electronics gave off which was unmistakable amongst everything else. Then of course the squeaking of the trademark wheels on the floor along with Jubilee's over indulgent exuberance greeting to them all. Kirika let a ever so small smirk curl on her lips as the girl came to a halt next to her, took a seat, Kirika could feel the girl's breath on her neck, as she asked her if she was Meditating.

Kirika opened her eyes and smiled at her younger friend, "Yes I am Jubilee, just preparing myself."

Then the Beast finished his 200 curls, she knew he had been calculating exactly a plan of action for their assault on Emma Frost's team. She sat there as Beast spoke briefly to Maremoto, explaining the use of code names both in training and in the field and that he should take note of any water ways that could be used to his advantages, then in turn he spoke to Jubilee regarding her skates, which Kirika looked down on them for a brief moment as Beast then turned to her asking if she had any thoughts on the matter at hand.

"Maremoto… "

Talon spoke as she heard him exit the immediate area to take note of his surroundings prior to her chance of a greeting, Beast had him blushing in from of Jubilee and herself so that likely could have been part of it.

"Taking the initiative before a proper greeting is done, some would be insulted, where I see that as what could be a good tactician on the battle field."

Talon rolled backwards onto her back bringing her legs to her chest, tensing her muscles as she rolled forward and kipped up into a frontal defensive stance. She looked to the Beast, "I have been going over the layout in my mind sir. Epiphany will indeed be expecting counter offensive tactics from us along with defensive tactics. So, in my option we need to out think he and her 'Soldiers' we need decoys. So mayhaps we send in a few people straight forward, in their line of sight to distract them while we get a much smaller contingent to head in the back door so to speak. While we leave a stationary group here to guard our flag? I do have other ideas, but would like to share more once the full team arrives."

Talon finished speaking as she fixed her uniform, straightening it out making sure everything was in the correct place.

MAREMOTO: Outside of the warehouse, Paz thought now would be a good time to try out his secondary power to look for water. He knew he had this ability, as whenever he was near water, his skin crawled. The only problem was that he'd always felt this off-handedly, never actually tried to feel it. So Paz had no idea what he was doing when he closed his eyes and extended an arm in front of him, palm facing out. It felt like a good thing to do.

As he focused on what his body was feeling, Paz made a slow semi-circle in front of him, scanning the immediate area for any feeling of water. Suddenly, a little to his left, Paz felt the palm of his hand tingle. He opened his eyes, and noticed he was aiming straight at a steel barrel standing nearby a small shed, perhaps several feet away from him.

A grin form on his face as he ran up to the barrel and peered in. Water. So his dowsing really worked. He'd have to practice that some more.

Paz noticed another identical metal barrel nearby this one, however when he went to examine it, he found that it was dry. Hmmm… so he was going to be at a disadvantage in resources unless he knew which barrels had water and which did not. He was very happy that Beast told him to go survey the area, else he'd have been screwed, frantically looking for water to use.

However, finding this barrel of water using his powers from a distance took too long comparing if he were in the heat of combat. Paz started to feel worried. What would he do if he got stuck in an alley with no water nearby? He'd be screwed. Out of the game. A sitting duck, completely useless. Paz didn't know any kind of fighting besides old school brawling, and he didn't think that'd stand up to any trained martial arts form.

Paz examined the two barrels to see if he could determine any distinction between the barrel filled with water and the empty one, but nothing stood out. He ran back to the warehouse, and approached Beast with an idea.

"Sir, there is a barrel of water outside, but I do not think all the barrels are filled," he explained his worry to his advisor in his Spanish accent. "And it will take too long to detect the water, I think.

"Can I have help collecting filled barrels to keep nearby the warehouse?" Paz asked, hoping he wasn't getting ahead of himself with this. "I can defend." He felt he'd be better of on home turf, knowing where his element was, rather than relying too much on his untrained instincts of dowsing.

CLOUD: Danny was, as always, when called to any form of training session, something of a nervous wreck. He'd changed into his uniform upstairs, where he had plenty of privacy. But even as he made his way down to the Danger Room, he found himself plagued with a thousand different 'what-ifs' and began imagining anything and everything that might go wrong. It was important to him to do well in school … even in these rather 'non-traditional' lessons, and it was perhaps even more important not to embarrass himself, or draw undue attention due to his own awkwardness and ineptitude. The blond knew he was far from the strongest or most powerful mutant at the school, and truthfully would have ranked himself near the very bottom of the list. The persistent worry about having to 'keep up' never failed to trigger an attack of powerful anxiety, and to his shame, he found himself distressed almost to the point of tears before the exercise had even begun.

Entering, he discovered to his shame that he was already late, and that several of his assigned squad-mates had already arrived and begun planning their strategy for the exercise. “Sorry,” he murmured, hanging his head as he approached the others. Having nothing of value to contribute himself – wholly out of his element in any form of combat or athletic competition – Danny kept quiet and did his best to shrink into the background, out of everybody's way. If he were given a specific task or order, he'd try his best to follow it, but lacked the confidence to put himself forward in a group situation.

DOMINO: Eh, Excalibur? Kind of a limp name, wasn’t it? Unless it was some choice throwback she had to Thomas Malory, it was hard to believe that Emma Frost had been responsible for such a moniker. Then again, maybe ‘The Bitch Brigade’ was already taken. She could just imagine the group photo for the Institute yearbook. Between her two-toned complexion, Rogue's two-tone hairdo, Emma's penchant for wearing bodices, Miguel's penchant for wearing next to nothing whenever possible, and Lady Jayne's - albeit quite attractive - fresh-from-boot-camp coif, they'd probably look like they'd stepped right out of a Motley Crue video.

Never one to turn down training, though the entire prospect of squadrons – while there did seem to be some logic behind them – was a little less than favorable to the lone wolf, Tam found herself among the first to arrive at Fort Frost. A little mundane and murky for Epiphany’s taste and a tad on the melodramatic side as far as scenes went. The instance of their little covert raid on the MGH Lab, in all honesty how many abandoned warehouses were they ever really going to storm in one lifetime? Hadn’t they discovered from the team’s recent jaunt to Muir Island and beyond – which Tam was still extremely bitter to have been kept from – that the criminal had developed a preference for more secure and sophisticated locales.

Not that Domino minded dark, damp, and dingy – those types of environments were exceedingly easier to move through undetected than pristine palaces. The scene itself was reminiscent of the movie “Gamer” – which to Dom had been one giant cock-tease… albeit she lacked a cock of her own to be teased. Though for some reason, maybe it was that she’d been mildly amused by the film which was a rarity to say the least, Tamara’s mind was still tolling off the rules of Zombieland – and no, not just because Dead Girl was rumored to be on the opposing squad.

Rule #1: Cardio. Hell, they had that going for them. By and large, the members of their squadron were the type that would be impossibly difficult to catch, hit, or keep up with. And those that weren’t had the good sense and intelligence to stay out of the fire… well, aside from surly St. John who preferred to revel in the fire.

Rule #29: The Buddy System, which also went hand in hand with Rule #8: Get a kickass partner! Much as she’d have just preferred to go it alone, trusting her powers to be the only partner she needed, the primary objective had been made clear… the success of the team as a whole was paramount. Yes, she was well aware what the underlying theme of this activity was: There would be no Children of the Atom coming home from fieldtrips to Hell in bodybags. Simulated or not, casualties were not going to be tolerated.

And that mean CYA… by covering the ass of the person behind you.

Dom eyed the various multiple points of entry into warehouse; this simply wouldn’t do. Proper strategy said funnel the enemy to your waiting jaws, not sit at the nose of the funnel and leave yourself susceptible to taking it from all angles.

“Rule Fourteen… ” she clicked her tongue, started to formulate a plan to eliminate gaping eyesores as she rolled a piece of sawed-off pipe under the ball of her split-toed shoe, “the fewer entry points the better.”

PYRO: He'd fucked everything up. He'd fucked up so badly that there was no longer any way to fix it – he'd run out of options. These were the thoughts that had been plaguing Pyro's mind for weeks now, and in truth, the young man had become all but a shadow of his former self. He showed up to classes now and again, though seemed distracted, disinterested, and disengaged from whatever lessons were going on. For the most part, he simply slept through the days, and wandered the halls or the grounds aimlessly at night, when his dreams seemed to turn traitor on him.

Magneto didn't want him anymore, and would never be coming back for him. That much seemed to have registered, as the teenager slowly began working his way towards accepting the inevitable truth. However, he'd also fucked up living on his own on the streets, and being at Xaviers – this place seemed to despise him as much as he hated it here. For christsakes, he'd not even managed to kill himself properly, when medical invention had managed to close off what he'd seen as the only avenue left. So presently, it was this, or jail, and after his experiences in juvie, prison seemed to hang over him like a fate far worse than death. Pyro was killing time until he could find something more expedient and reliable … he knew some of the students here, like Domino or Bishop, were allowed weapons. It didn't seem wholly impossible for him to get his hands on a gun at some point, and finish the job properly …

For now though, he'd arrived at the Danger Room, still in his civilian clothing. He flatly refused to put on one of the Institute uniforms, and would apparently continue to do so until the day he died. Not seeing any of the others assigned to his training squad, the Aussie took a seat near the far corner, and commenced to playing with his lighter. On-off-on-off-on-off-on-off the little metal box clicked back-and-forth in his fingers with joyless monotony, and the smoke-grey eyes watching the flame held a distant look, vacant and distracted. Physically, Allerdyce was here, as was required, but his heart and mind where wholly absent, and even St. John didn't remember anymore where he'd misplaced them …

VULCAN: Gabriel walked into the Danger Room dressed in his uniform. Sometimes he wanted a cape, after all he could fly, and a cape would offer him an air of the superhero. The only thing was doors especially revolving ones would pose a danger, at least according to The Incredibles . He still thought that a cape was a cool accessory.

Inside the Danger Room, he surveyed the others Who did he know here? Jubilee, everyone knew Jubilee, and Pyro, this was true of him as well. McCoy was there in the Mavericks warehouse, and Frost was in the other with the Excaliburs. It was not like he and Scott actually spent any talking. They had grown up alone so they were used to it sort of. He knew next to nothing about Domino, Maremoto or Talon. Cloud was too reclusive.

ROGUE: Rogue had been named the Deputy Leader of Excalibur, underneath Epiphany's Lead. It was kinda a big deal… a new responsibility. She had gone through everything she could get a hold of, on how her teammates' powers worked.

Rogue also made a silent note to herself to gain permission to browse all of the Cerebra files, so that she could better understand all of her classmates' powers and how they worked - it would make her a better X-Woman, insofar as using her own powers…

Approaching the Excalibur warehouse, Anna Marie spotted others - but not everyone was here yet.

::Good, Ah'm not tha last one here… :: she briefly thought with relief as she walked over to stand nearby Emma.

As she walked, Rogue passed Pyro as he sat in the corner, flicking his lighter on… off… on… off… He looked so absorbed in what he was doing that he may be totally oblivious to the rest of the world. That could be a problem… unless he snaps out of it soon.

"Come on, everyone - let's gather ova' here an' map out some strategies," Rogue called out to Domino and Pyro, hoping that they would come along without much lip - she did not feel like dealing with anyone's attitude just now. Hopefully, the others would join them, too, as they arrived.

DOMINO: “Rule Fourteen… the fewer entry points the better.”

"Well, yeah… Good point. What d'ya think we could do about that?"

BEAST: Contrary to Cloud’s belief, he was in fact NOT late, though he might fear he was. Hank drew a slightly quizzical look. “Sorry?… Not at all, Cloud, you’ve nothing to be sorry for.” Hank recognized Danny efforts, and was fully intent on his inclusion. “We’re still formulating our options before the session starts, so please, if you have something to suggest, we’re more than willing to hear you out.”

Hank looked to Summers, “I’m afraid this is a serious exercise Vulcan. We will need no distractions of background music if we are to be successful as a team. If music helps you concentrate, by all means, retrieve your iPod if you have one and return post-haste… IF Dazzler were on this squad, she would have her own source, would she not? I cannot be held responsible if your failure to hear an opponent slipping by you is your own. I understand your desire to find an additional motivator, regarding music, but it will not be happening in this exercise for the whole of the group. You can go and return quickly if you wish.”

Hank didn’t want to sound harsh, but Talon’s senses, as well as his own were likely to be overloaded by distractions If he allowed the music. Hank made a notation that further DR exercise might be designed to allow such, but as this one was not configured that way, and Gabriel was not likely thinking of others’ verifiable needs. He wouldn’t fault him for it, it was an honest request, and Hank allowed Vulcan music for himself; it was the best compromise available to accommodate everyone.

“Decoys are a good plan… The trick is not letting on whom is a decoy or not… Maremoto guarding Home might work but I’d like someone be prepared to fall back to back him up… Talon, choose one to patrol a defensive perimeter… The rest, we need a ‘3-prong’ arrangement of bodies… 1 main force to make a heavy nuisance of themselves up the middle… I would suggest perhaps Jubilee on one flank around the buildings, and Vulcan on the other but both heading for the Excalibur’s warehouse… both of you are highly mobile, and very accurate in the applied focus of your respective ‘blasts’… if someone sees a clear way in, inform the others. But be aware, the other team might be setting up defenses of their own. Help each other, and we all succeed… So think .. who wants to be a designated decoy? We need 2… ”

Hank moved of to help Paz with a few filled barrels setting 4 that were filled with water near the entrance.

“Where do you want them? We’ve got… 4 empties, beyond those 4 full ones… can you transfer half of each ‘full’ one to the ‘empties’ available? That gives you 8 half-full… I might suggest a planting them in a radius around the Flag beacon, to be able to defend from any direction, but their placement shouldn’t strain your control… so you let me know where you want them after transferring the water.”

TALON: Talon looked at the members of her team that were before her. She was pondering just whom would make the best defensive perimeter out of them all as Beast had asked of her. Who was most durable next to her. Who could provide an adequate defensive line.

"I believe Dead Girl could very well hold that position."

Talon nodded to Vulcan as he floated in mid air. She looked to the entry ways as she walked back and forth surveying all of the entry points that they had. She looked up skyward to the ceiling and then down to the very ground beneath them. She sniffed the air, she could smell the water flowing. This simulation truly was the most elaborate yet. There were actual smells filtered in. She would need to applaud Xavier on his acumen later on after the task was complete win or lose.

"Decoys are much needed while we have one or two with the sole purpose to retrieve the flag, to possibly pass it off to another team member, run interference. Use your imaginations out there. I realize that some of you have grown bored with these exercises at times. I to had for a brief period, with my heightened senses I knew there was absolutely no threat, no chance for physical harm. So I just did not see a point. But then I took the time to think about it, it's for the betterment of the school of our race, Mutantkind that we each strive to help each other. Even one of us, slacks, gets moody, complains about this or that. Or is not a team player, it reflects on us all."

Talon looked down to the floor grate, "It reflects on us as a whole, if we disrespect this school, our uniforms we wear, or when we go out to serve and protect. These training exercises will help us all to better ourselves."

WOLFSBANE: Rahne had originally arrived at the Danger room about 15 minutes early while talking with Hank about this and that on various subjects. It was still difficult getting used to his new 'looks', though making conversations with him made it better. It was getting easier to be around him without being surprised of his appearances.

After Pyro had been in conflict with himself… More than usual, Rahne had asked Hank to go look for him, since she didn't think he would be showing up after all that had happened. Some, well most still saw him as Magneto's lackey and half of those that didn't was fed up with his crap. Rahne didn't hate him, nor was she disappointed. It was hard having your allegiances torn when you were so accustomed to them.

She put on her specially made uniform with the green piping. It had certainly been a while since it had been put to use.

"I'll be back just before we start, Hank. So just begin without me if I should, against odds be slightly late." With that, she ran up the stairs to find the pyromaniac with a temper hotter than his mutation.

------ LATER ---------

Returning just as most people had entered the danger room, she had looked everywhere he could and couldn't have been. His room, the cafeteria, though he didn't hang out there much with any of the others. It would just cause him hurt - and she knew it. The gardens had been sniffed out, the garage to see if he'd taken a car, everywhere! Then looking at the time from her watch she realized that she wasn't going to find him, so she returned to the Danger Room entrance only to find St. John standing at the entrance looking more unprepared than she'd ever seen him. He looked as if he could use some straightening out.

"Hey Pyro" Rahne said, "I went looking for you, but it looks like you'd rather be here than your room" she said with no smiles. She knew all to well that flattery and smiles didn't bite onto Pyro's good side. He was a sour apple that needed maturing. Maybe after all these incidents he was ready to open up to the institute?

"Are you all ready?" She asked everyone standing at the entrance she said as she was preparing to enter the Danger Room.

MAREMOTO: Paz grinned as Beast went out to assist him in retrieving water barrels, glad his suggestion was approved. It settled the anxiety that had been building up in him of getting stuck out in the field with no water.

Paz nodded to Beast's order to fill all eight barrels with water, even if they were half full. That'd take out the guessing factor entirely. And now he got to flex his powers before the game actually started.

Wiggling his fingers in excitement, Paz searched in his mind for that… well, he didn't know what it was. A feeling of some sort-- a tingle in the back of his head, ready to come out and touch the water. So he allowed it to do just that.

As he flexed his hands, he felt the rush of energy course down his arms and the tingle in his hand, which was his body telling him he was ready. With palms facing two of the full barrels, Paz lifted his wrists,. A flash of light pulsed under his skin, and the water rose from the barrels as two pools floating in the air.

Except he only needed half of the water, not all of it. So Paz relaxed his hold, and felt the weight of the water lift from his muscles and some of the water fall back into the barrel with a splash.

That should be enough now. With flowing motions of his arms and hands, Paz guided the pools of water as streams in the air to the empty barrels, this time neatly filling them up like water pouring from a pitcher.

He smiled, glad that worked out so well, and repeated the process for the next two.

[BEAST]: “Where do you want them?…

Paz relaxed his powers, and the glowing blue light from his nerves under his skin dimmed away, his eyes returning to their normal state of not-glowing.

"Around the flag is good. If they are knocked over and spill it does not matter. It might be easier… " he added, comparing what it took to getting the water out of the barrels versus the pool. It had been easier just to scoop it off the ground, rather than lift it from the barrel. And he could do more if the floor was flooded-- he'd have some field control.

"Can we spill them?" he looked up to Beast.

CLOUD: Beast assured him that he wasn’t late, so perhaps he wasn’t quite the last one to arrive, Danny considered. It was a small relief to know that the group had not been kept waiting on his account, at least. He drew a little closer to the others where they had gathered, and offered a small, serious nod to indicate that he’d heard and understood, but had inwardly already determined to keep his mouth shut, certain that he had nothing of value to add to the team. Cloud listened carefully as strategies were laid out, and as much as he would have liked to be able to put his hand up and volunteer himself as a ‘decoy’, simply to have a job and something specific to do, logically, he realized that doing such would be impractical. If he shifted forms, he would be wholly intangible, and incapable of touching anything – including any of the flags in play. If he realized this, surely their opponents on the Excalibur squad would also, and ignore him, since he posed no threat at all.

While Talon’s speech was most likely meant to inspire them, her words only seemed to make the knot in the blond’s stomach that much heavier and tighter. Danny understood the importance of the exercises, and the weight of responsibility placed on all of their shoulders … but this only made what he viewed as his own inevitable failings all the worse. He chewed on his lower lip anxiously, but still found himself with nothing to say; instead, he tried to focus all of his energy on not crying, and not letting his hands shake to the point where they’d be noticeable to his peers.

PYRO: The Pyro that had turned up for Danger Room training was like a pale ghost or shade of the … spirited, willful, and hot-headed delinquent most knew him as. Depression and despair had been eating him up from the inside out like a cancer for weeks, though he had no name to put on what was happening. Mental illness was invisible, insidious; whether no one at the Institute recognized what was happening, or saw the symptoms and simply didn’t care, the net result was the same: this hollowed-out shell of a person, seemingly bent on self-destruction, was not the same St. John Allerdyce anymore.

He was lost inside his own spiraling thoughts, and possibly even half-asleep when Rogue attempted to call the group together. He didn’t hear her, and didn’t give any indication that he was aware of his surroundings until Wolfsbane approached and addressed him directly. “Huh … wha …?” he questioned blearily, snapping the lighter shut as he looked up, taking a moment to piece together what she’d just asked him. Apparently she was annoyed at having to go and search for him, when he’d been here all along? “Sorry,” he muttered. The word was all but a foreign one to him, but it seemed like the appropriate response, the one least likely to start a fight he lacked the energy or interest for. “I dunno, I just … whatever,” he explained his presence in the Danger Room with an indifferent shrug. It wasn’t a matter of rather being one place or another … when he didn’t want to be anywhere, it didn’t seem to matter anymore, and wasn’t worth caring about when all he was doing was going through the motions anyway.

JUBILEE: "Oh… My bad" Jubilee had said to Talon with a chuckle, after the girl had told the firecracker that she was indeed meditating. Then Beast spoke to her and basically told her to get rid of the skates. Beast had a point. She would be much faster without them. With them, they would be holding her back to perform most of her techniques. "Oky-doky" Jubilee replied to Beast enthusiastically.

She took off her skates, walked over to the entrance of the Danger Room, set them down by the doors, and put on her sneakers. She tied them nice and tight and skipped back to where Talon was standing. As Talon began to speak Jubilee began to stretch. She needed all her muscles to be loose and relaxed in order for her to do any kind of aerial stunt. What if she was needed to do a backhandspring-back-tuck? Or what if she needed to execute a triple flip from a bar? Though the second one might seem unlikely during this training session, she never put aside the option for just in case it should come up.

"Eye-eye captain?" Jubilee saluted when Beast gave her her position in which she was to take up. He made a suggestion that she, along with Vulcan, be center stage, making a lot of ruckus and distracting the other team. This was what Jubilee was made for. Her power alone provided sound, light, and force. She was a walking time-bomb, ready to explode at a moments notice. "The other team better be ready, because if I see someone, I'ma blind them" The firecracker admitted, and hoped to be praised by either Beast or Talon.

It seemed like a good enough strategy to her. She could provide loud booming sounds, while also using her power to take away one of the others teams most prized and useful senses… Their sight! Then she saw Cloud and walked up to him. "Hey, Danny… er… I mean" she leaned her head toward him and whispered, "Cloud!" She smiled at the boy hoping that it would help calm him down. From Jubilee's point of view, it seemed her friend was beginning to panic. She didn't want Danny to panic, otherwise he might get hurt… or so Jubilee thought.

She had spent quite some time with Danny at the Humane Society, and found that he was actually really cool to hang around with; Jubilee could not be any happier to see that he was placed on her team! "C'mon Danny… " Jubilee said as she stretched her hand out to grab ahold of Danny's. "Maybe you could be, like, a defensive person or something. With your power, you could make it difficult for the other team to retrieve the Bacon… No, I mean beacon… " Jubilee looked at Danny and began to laugh at herself for saying bacon, not beacon.

EPIPHANY: Epiphany listened as Rogue had gotten the proverbial ball rolling with Excalibur. Some had considered the team name cheesy and trite, but she had reasons behind her selection of the nom de guerre. The Legend of King Arthur was that he had taken a chaotic group of bitterly warring warlords and forged the legendary Knights of The Round Table. If Arthur could do it, so could Emma Frost.

Once Domino outlined the expected points of weakness, she spoke up.

"Excellent analysis, Domino. I will retain your services here to head the defense of our territory. At least until I change my mind."

"As for my assault team, I want speed on our side. That will consist of Rogue as leader, Scamper, and Lightning. Rogue, I recommend you copy Scamper's telekinesis for the assault. Of course, please use your discretion in selecting other subjects for your power copying."

She looked to the others around her.

"The rest of us will defend our flag here. I'll keep all of us in telepathic communication, the better to focus and direct our forces."

"Spectre will use his gifts to hide our flag in shadow, thus making it more difficult to find. Especially when I begin telling our respected opponents that some random object in the room is the flag they so dearly crave to steal from us."

Emma began to rub her gloved hands together in quiet anticipation.

"A word with you all, while we can manage it without being pestered by Henry's forces."

She looked to each of them with that serene smile.

"Some of you have doubts. That's natural. Doubts about yourselves, and one another."

"I do not share in those concerns." she said simply. "I have high expectations, and I know you will serve our team with excellence."

Emma started to circle the group, her Sapphire eyes finding each of them.

"Some of you were left unwanted by other team leaders. You would be too difficult to manage, or too untrained. Not enough of a team player, they said, or too unstable in unexpected situations."

Emma stopped and shook her head ruefully.

"I wanted each of you on my team. Where others saw problems, I saw amazing untapped talent. I don't expect perfection today, but I do expect an honest attempt at doing your best."

Emma folded her hands behind her.

"That's all I'm asking today. Do your best and have some fun. The world doesn't depend on our efforts today. But one day, it might. This is the chance to make mistakes and not have it cost a life. Take advantage."

"Questions?"

DEAD GIRL: Dead Girl stepped into the Danger Room carrying a croquet mallet over her shoulder. She was wearing her X uniform, the one with the bare midriff. After all, who needed armor when your body repaired damage as quickly as Tat's did?

"Hey, hey, hey!" she called out in a cheery manner.

She stepped up to the group's leader and grinned toothily.

"Hey, boss. Just tell me what you want me to do, and I'll be happy to do it."

She sat down on the floor and tightened her boot buckles, all the while singing to herself.

"You run, run… run away

It's your heart… that you betray

Feeding on… your hungry eyes

I bet you're not so civilized"

"Well, isn't love..primitive

A wild gift… that you wanna give

Break out of captivity

And follow me, stereo jungle child

Love is the kill… your heart's still wild"

"Shootin' at the walls of heartache, bang, bang, I am the warrior

Well I am the warrior, and heart to heart you'll win..if you survive

the warrior… the warrior"

"You talk, talk, you talk to me

Your eyes touch me physically

Stay with me, we'll take the night

As passion takes another bite"

"Who's the hunter… who's the game?

I feel the beat… call your name

I hold you close… in victory

Idon't wanna tame your animal style..

you won't be caged… in the call of the wild… "

Shootin' at the walls of heartache (shootin' at the walls of heartache)

The warrior…

I am the warrior, and heart

to heart you'll win… if you survive

The warrior… the warrior"

After finishing the song, she looked up to the gathered team around her.

"What the hell does that mean? 'You're eyes touch me physically'?"

"I can handle a lot of foreplay skills, but don't come at me with your eyestalks thinkin' you're gonna feel me up with your corneas."

"That's just gross." she said with a rueful shake of the head.

BEAST: “Dead girl it is, unless she has an objection, on defense perimeter… that leaves 6 others for the forward offensive portion”

“If broken evenly among those 3 ‘prongs’.. being 1 left flank around the intervening buildings, 1 being up the center, and 1 being the right flank around the other side… that gives 2 to each sub-group. I’ll take one of the middle group ‘slots’, as I’m sure making a target of myself will make me a very pressing decoy at least, at best I can back up whoever makes it into the forward to grab and abscond with the opposing team’s flag. So let’s try to figure who’s in which group… I suggested Jubilee on 1 flank with Vulcan on the other… IF those are agreeable.. that leaves 3 more placements to fill…”

“Perhaps, Vulcan, you have an idea of whom you’d work well with? I’m only suggesting sub-groups, not demanding them… and teamwork is important on this session.”

Hank gave a look around to the outside, and noted to Danny, careful to draw him a bit closer and off to the side, speaking in a low volume to retain as much disgression for him as possible. “You noted a desire to have several ‘private’ areas available before?.. places to be able to retrieve your clothing with some distinct modicum of sight-blocking while you re-dress yourself if you needed? You might then note those intervening buildings, and the open-acesss through the windows, but plentiful places to stash one’s clothing and return to if needed.”

Hank only noted the request, but had not inquired as to the reasoning behind Cloud’s desire for privacy… he simply allowed for the condition to be made available to Danny. Hank knew Danny was nervous sometimes and only sought to introduce calm were it might be most needed, so Danny could see his own great worth for himself.

Beast moved the barrels as Maremoto designated, and considered the point on spillage. “I don’t see why not… you each know your abilities far better than I, and what your respective extents and limits are… I’m mainly here to facilitate their use and honing.” he chuckled. “So, if you feel you’d have better control with the water spread out, I doubt the DR Is going to ‘evaporate’ it.. it would still be available, inside or outside of the barrels matters less.. those are just for your benefit of readily available ‘ammo’.”

“As well..” Hank called to the rest of them, “If you need something out there, between here and the Excalibur warehouse, such as a large item thrown as a distraction so you can get to a particular point you need to, listen to each other and assist where you can. For example, I’ll be glad to render one of those loads of palettes out there into makeshift ‘frisbees’ if you need me to, so you can get in and back out with their flag.” He smirked. “Communicate.. and we all benefit…”

MAREMOTO: When Beast finished positioning the barrels filled with water around the flag, Paz decided spilling them would probably be a better bet for him. He wouldn't have to worry about finding and targeting the water in the barrels; he could just sweep up from the floor and throw it around as he pleased.

Which made the whole process of filling each barrel up completely useless, but hey, that was how progress was made. He acted on one idea, and realized another idea would work better. Who's to say he would have even thought to spill the barrels right away if he hadn't been filling them, rather than get the idea when one accidentally did fall during combat?

A girl entered the warehouse, a rather pretty girl, Paz would have to add, wielding what looked like a hammer. Odd. Paz heard Beast call her Dead Girl, which seemed insulting to the Boricuan. She looked perfectly alive and healthy…

Nonetheless, Beast seemed to assign her to defense, which meant she and Paz would be working together… which meant Paz had to introduce himself.

As she finished her (equally odd as her hammer) song, Paz approached her while she sat on the floor.

"Hey… " he began with his accent; "we are on defense together. I'm Paz… errr… Maremoto," Paz corrected himself (he'd have to get used to saying his codename) and extended a hand, partly in greeting and partly to help her up once she got her boots done, because that was a nice thing to do when someone was on the ground.

[PYRO: “Sorry"… "I dunno, I just… whatever” ]

She let the rest enter so there was only her and Pyro left in the room. If Pyro was sorry about anything, something was really off… Not that she didn't hope that he was out of reach of being sorry, but it was unprovoked… and well… Something was off…

She looked at him, flipping open and closing his lighter. It was a trait that made him seem more vounerable to others she guessed. He was after all easy to read on some levels, and impossible on others.

She knew first hand that he wouldn't willingly hurt her and that kind of trust wasn't easily earned, but something rubbed off on her that he was in conflict with himself.

"Allerdyce..?" Rahne said firmly in a harsh tone, yet friendly as she went over to him, leaning up against the wall closest to him, facing him. She wanted to say: Spill it, What's the matter or Start talking but knew she could piss him off easilier than transforming herself to her feral form.

Instead of saying anything she just stared at him with her green sincere eyes that showed him that he had nothing to fear from her. Well… She hoped that he'd already gotten that message by now, but with St. John, nothing was a certainty.
