PERSONALITY: |
| Paz was always a confident person, but ever since the little incident at the swim meet, Paz has become somewhat more reserved exteriorly. Now he is somewhat quiet, not to engage others in conversation too quickly (which is partly because he is not entirely fluent in English) and avoids confrontation when he can. Because of this, people often mistake him as being shy though he’s not. Paz is sociable and friendly (and surprisingly funny); he just won’t be the first one to start talking.
His attention is one of defense in a fight and focus on the protection of his mates, not the offense, or the debilitation of his enemies. Because of his defensive disposition, Paz isn’t one for impulse actions. He will always think before acting, no matter what. |

SPECIAL ABILITIES
ADVANTAGES: |
| ATHLETE: Paz is an exceptional swimmer, thanks to training and his power.
INSIGHT: Probably a side effect of being attune to ebbs and tides, Paz can recognize when something is out of place, or “not flowing right”. This also gives him a small amount of EMPATHY.
CREATIVE: Paz has an imaginative mind, which stems from the open-ended potential of his power. He is able to think out of the box.
LANGUAGES (Spanish): Paz's native tongue is Spanish, but he has learned English well enough in elementary school. |
POWERS: |
| HYDROKENISIS: Paz has the ability to control the movement of water. However, his mind alone is not sufficient, and he must use body movements, specifically his limbs, to conduct the flow. The range of Paz’s hydrokensis varies as much as his imagination can, from creating simple water whips or spheres to flooding the field and causing waves.
Paz must be able to see the water in order to manipulate it, and his limbs must be free. Any sort of movement from his body can make the water move, however because of water’s characteristic to flow, staccato movements do not work well. Rather, the most effective means of control are wide, fluid motions of his arms and hands, in correlation to how water actually flows. Paz currently cannot control more than an olypmic size pool volume of water.
The usage of his power ranges as vast as his imagination. He can use his power to make himself swim faster, propel boats by causing continuous undulations beneath them, create waves, water whips, streams of water than can redirect projectiles, splash walls to slightly redirect or reduce the impact of a close combat physical attack, columns of water to act as shields or buffers, fast moving blades of water than can cut, and even mist.
When using his powers, Paz's nerves glow an aqua-blue color in correlation to which muscles are being electrically stimulated to produce motion. This is thought to be attributed to the need for Paz to move his body to move the water: a nervous extension of himself to the water. For instance, if he were using just his hands, the nerves for the muscles from his wrist to his fingers would pulse blue in correlation to the nerves firing in them. If it were his whole arm, the necessary nerves in his bicep, tricep, deltoids, etc. would all pulse blue.
Since the blue light is connected to his nerves firing, only when it reaches the end of the axon is it briefly visible because it travels from his brain down his spine to the muscle too quickly to be seen. However, if Paz were to maintain a continuous output of his power, eventually the whole nerve will pulse with the blue light.
When Paz activates his power, the nerves in his head emit a constant, dim, blue glow, as well as his eyes. This has been theorized to be the result of continuous brain activity in maintaining what is described as the nervous connection with the water.
The glow brightens or dims depending on the intensity of his performance. Paz himself has described the feeling as “moving another limb”. He has attested that thinking alone does nothing.
The blue light in his nerves is the manifestation of his biological mutation that allows him to move the water, however what that blue light is exactly is yet to be discovered.
DOWSING: Paz can feel the presence of nearby water. Currently, since this ability has not been trained yet, Paz can only detect water up to ten feet away, and only if he were focusing on doing so. |
FIGHTING SKILLS: |
| FIGHTING SKILL (Underwater): Because he is surrounded by water, Paz can control the entire battlefield when he is underwater. His abilities include making whirlpools (trapping enemies), water pulses (similar to concussive shots of psychics), control of currents, and faster swimming.
FLUID DYNAMICS: Paz has a natural understanding about how fluids move because of his power.
ATHLETICS (Swimming): Paz is a star swimmer, winning several awards and trophies.
DANCE (Salsa): Not really a fighting skill, but a skill nonetheless. He can salsa pretty well, coming from Puerto Rico and all. |
DISADVANTAGES: |
| SHORT: Paz’s only 5’4”. Both his dad and mom are below the average height, so there isn’t too much future in his growth.
LANGUAGE BARRIER: Paz is not entirely fluent in English, which can cause him to misunderstand directions.
NON-CONFRONTATIONAL: Paz really does not like arguing. He's horrible at it. And it doesn't help that he's not great at English. Paz avoids fights whenever he can. |

HISTORY
Paz was the middle child of Alisia and Fernando Estrada. He was born at the end of a bad storm over the city of San Juan, which is where he got his name Paz, meaning 'peace'. Both his parents were science teachers at his school.
Growing up on the island of Puerto Rico, Paz was never far from water. At school, he was part of the swim team, and showed a natural talent for being in the water. Though only a freshman at the time, he was chosen for varsity and won several awards and set records unheard of in his age group.
Nobody knew how Paz did it-- they couldn't understand how he was so fast in the water. He had a rather stocky build, which, if anything, would have put him at a disadvantage to his slender competitors. Some people thought he had a birth defect and had webbed feet or hands, but of course that was easily disproved. Paz would just give everyone the same answer when they asked: "Me gusta nadar." I like to swim.
Obviously, though, there was more to that. Paz was not just the regular superstar athlete. He was far from regular, in fact. Paz was a mutant, and only he knew it.
Of course, he didn't call himself a mutant, and he didn't know exactly what this thing he had whenever he was in water was, but he knew enough to say it wasn't human. In the water, Paz felt...different. Stronger. Calmer. Like he was right where he belonged. He could feel the water all around him, like it was a part of his body. The ripples on the surface, the stirring of kicking feet...Paz felt it all. And when he swam, it was incredible. The water wasn't his enemy trying to slow him down, but his friend, clearing out of his way and pushing him to go faster.
Paz didn't tell anyone about this feeling; he kept it private to himself. No one needed to know about it. All they needed to concern themselves with was the fact that Paz was a damn good swimmer.
But soon his secret to his swimming success could stay a secret no longer.
It'd been a swim meet just like any other. Nothing special, nothing important. Swim the four hundred free style, that was it. At the sound of the buzzer, Paz dived into the pool, and began his stroke. Easy business. Before the first turn he was already in the lead, and since touching the water that familiar feeling washed through his body-- that feeling of invincibility. Except somehow, though, he felt stronger this time. Faster. Even more connected with the water, like a new rush of power just opened inside him. And before he knew it, Paz had finished first a good lap ahead of the rest of the racers.
Like the good sport he is, Paz stayed in the pool until the race was over to shake hands with his neighbors. Except when they touched the wall, they didn't give him a look of congratulations. Hell, they didn't even give him a look of pure loathing for winning the race. No, Paz was getting a look that could only be described in these three letters: WTF?
The pool grew quiet. Paz looked around to see all eyes on him, everyone wearing that same confused expression. He didn't understand what was going on. That was until he looked down at himself.
Paz yelled in surprise at what he saw. Along his entire frame, a glowing network of blue light was shining from beneath his skin. Quickly he scurried out of the pool, thinking it had something to do with the water...a reaction to the chlorine, or something...but the glow remained steady even as he stood bare chested on the tile floor.
He couldn't believe what he was seeing: his entire body, from his toes to what he could see of the bottom of his neck was glowing with the network of blue light. He rubbed his body to try and get it off, but at a closer look it was actually under his skin.
Paz looked up to everyone around him, who were all still at a loss for words. But before anyone could say anything, the glowing boy ran straight for the locker room (and the lifeguard didn't even tell him 'no running').
Paz locked himself in the bathroom stall and after a good ten minutes or so, the glow finally faded, but he didn't leave. Not until his father came and found him tear ridden, hiding under a towel.
And so was the advent of Maremoto, the boy who could move water.
