APPEARANCE: |
| Tall, slim, and very pale, almost everything about Jono is long and lean. He weighs considerably less than one might expect from his height, due to the absence of sizable portions of his head, torso, and most major internal organs. Since the manifestation of his powers, his physical development has not progressed any further since the time he was sixteen.
His eyes are dark, intense, and expressive, though they are often obscured by unruly auburn hair that often appears in need of a damn good cut. He previously had piercings in his tongue, lower lip, and navel. All 3 have since been made redundant.
Most of Jono's wardrobe is black, and his second most-prized possession (after his guitar) is a pair of heavy, knee-high boots, covered in buckles, zips, and other hardware. His style is an odd mix of punk/goth/glam, and could even be labeled as slightly androgynous. He prefers tight-fitting clothes, and customarily wears heavy "guy-liner" and black nail polish.
Jono's most distinguishing feature is the gaping hole in his chest, stretching from just below his nose to his navel. Filled with a constantly seething mass of fiery psionic energy, he is careful to keep this deformity covered at all times, usually with a set of specially-treated black leather wrappings. |

PSYCHOLOGICAL PROFILE
CHARACTER CONCEPT: |
| Bad-boy with a soft side |
ORIENTATION: |
| Bisexual |
DEMEANOR: |
| Loner |
NATURE: |
| Curmudgeon |
PERSONALITY: |
| Though never an especially optimistic person, and a loner by nature, after his mutation manifested, Jono became particularly moody and withdrawn. Extremely private and very quiet, he often comes across as cold, distant, and morose. Chamber views himself as something monstrous, and often goes out of his way to isolate himself. Although he’s never said it, and is unlikely to, part of his behaviour stems from the fact that he is terrified of harming anyone else.
He has a tendency to hide his bitterness behind a mask of sarcasm. A former stage musician, Jono is at heart a showman, and quite adept at putting on a convincing performance as a sneering, strutting bad-boy. When he is pushed into social situations, his behaviour is very different from when he's alone. He can be defiant, mouthy, and honestly, a bit of a lout.
Chamber has a very low tolerance for bullshit. He has no issue commenting on things (or people) he feels negatively about. Most people are turned off by this less than charming aspect of his persona, but there are a few who have come to recognize that Jono can always be counted upon to inject a healthy dose of bleak honesty and common sense into any social situation.
Nevertheless, beneath his grim, dark exterior, Jono is a sensitive young man capable of great compassion and kindness. As much as he argues to the contrary, Chamber is not without a heart. |
GOALS: |
| Jono's goals extend beyond just mastering and controlling his mutation, to trying to comprehend exactly what it is. Is he a man who's body is being slowly torn and broken apart by psionic energy, or is he a being of pure psionic energy being restrained and limited by a human-shaped shell? Is he or is he not technically "alive"? Has his body ceased to age because he is some kind of immortal, or will he enjoy a regular lifespan in the body of a teenager?
Ideally, Chamber's personal goal is to find a way to repair the damage done to his face and body, and to go on and live a 'normal' life. He'd love to return to his dream of becoming a world famous rock star.
However, fate and natural selection appear to have other plans in mind for him. At some point, whether he likes it or not, he may be forced to accept and embrace the vast amounts of power and potential his mutation has gifted him with. |

SPECIAL ABILITIES
ADVANTAGES: |
| POKER FACE - As Chamber is missing half of his face, it is often difficult to decipher his true feelings. His eyes are sometimes described as more expressive than most, but most still regard him as inscrutable.
TIRELESS - Chamber is essentially a shell for what may well be endless amounts of psionic energy. As such, Chamber does not need to eat, drink, breathe, or sleep. This seemingly limitless store of energy can keep him active longer than most.
HARD TO KILL - It is not known whether or not Jono is in fact, actually immortal. Many would regard him as technically dead, due to the fact that he does not age, and does not exhibit basic respiratory or circulatory functions. Jono can't be poisoned, drowned, electrocuted, or strangled. While he can be injured, actually killing him is a tricky, potentially dangerous endeavor.
PRESENCE - Jono retains some of the stage presence he developed as a musician. He still has the habit of walking into a room as though it owes him a favour. While he rarely performs publicly anymore, his powers drastically enhance the experience for his audience - they not only 'hear' his music, but also empathically experience everything Jono feels while he sings/plays. |
POWERS: |
| PSIONIC BIOKINESES - Jono’s vaporized chest cavity is filled with a fluctuating energy field that he manipulates through psionic biokinesis; he has very limited control of these powers, but is capable of unleashing raw energy discharges at-will that can strike with concussive force or disrupt the binding properties of matter on a sub-atomic level so that it explodes violently.
Without excessive concentration, he can hold this energy field to form the shape, more or less, of a human body (so when covered with clothing it appears he is still whole). This has been explained by the fact that he retains a strong subconscious memory of what his body is supposed to look like, which exerts itself over the psionic force field.
From time to time, Jono experiences a build-up of power within his chest, which he describes as a sense of 'pressure'. While not painful, per se, it can grow very uncomfortable, and he will take the opportunity to remove the wrappings concealing his injury and 'vent' some of this excess energy privately.
When unleashed, Chamber's psionic energy explodes from his chest erratically, pushing out in all directions. His powers, while not actual flames, take on a fiery appearance in both their shape and colour.
PROJECTION TELEPATHY - Jono ‘speaks’ telepathically through broad or personal thought projection. His telepathic voice sounds identical to his original voice, roughened by cigarettes and retaining his accent.
PSIONIC BLASTS - In times of duress, Chamber can use his telepathy in an offensive way. Something like shouting, Chamber lets loose a psychic blast into the minds of the people around him. Usually felt as a punch to the back of the head, it sometimes carries words, colours, or even empathic properties.
Oftentimes, this mental blast is involuntary, and it is unable to be directed at a specific target. While victims are not affected physically, these blasts can cause extreme pain, unconsciousness, and theoretically, even death. |
FIGHTING SKILLS: |
| OBSERVATION - Although Chamber is able to communicate telepathically, he still is a fairly good example of the concept that when one sense fails, the others pick up the slack. Unable to speak, Chamber has become a keen observer.
PERFORMING - Chamber is able to play both acoustic and electric guitar, and before losing his vocal chords was a talented singer. Former front-man for an underground rock band called "The Johnnies", he now rarely performs save for his own enjoyment.
COMBAT STYLE (Streetfighting) - During his misspent youth, Jono was involved in more than his fair share of scuffles. This skill lets him use the environment to his advantage when involved in combat situations. These actions (bites, eye gouges, kidney punches, and so on) are generally frowned upon in heroic circles.
LOCKPICKING - A bit of a trouble maker back in England, Chamber was fairly skilled at getting into places he wasn't meant to be. |
DISADVANTAGES: |
| MONSTROUS - Large portions of Chamber's body are simply missing. His face and abdomen have been reduced to an empty cavity that is now filled with a writhing mass of flame-like psionic energy. Despite his efforts to keep this deformity covered up, he will never appear 'normal'.
MUTE - Chamber has no internal organs, no vocal chords, and no lower jaw. He is incapable of speech or making vocal sounds of any kind. To compensate, he communicates with others telepathically.
PERMANENT WOUND - During the manifestation of his powers, Chamber's chest and internal organs were vaporized and never again healed. If the energy within his body was ever extinguished, Chamber would be nothing but an empty shell with a gaping hole where his chest should be. His body is kept 'alive' only by means of this psionic force-field.
UNCONTROLLABLE POWER - Chamber has very little voluntary control over his abilities. When he releases the psionic fires in his chest, he has only minimal control over their direction or intensity. He is able to leash them to some degree only through his fear that by allowing them to flare to their full power, he would likely lose more, if not all of his body in the process.
ANTISOCIAL - Chamber is, quite simply, a difficult individual to get along with. His own self-loathing colours most of his interactions with other people. He is trapped in something of a catch-22; wherein his poor self-image and negativity prompt others to avoid him, which only exacerbates his image & attitude problems.
Chamber sees himself as something monstrous, and no longer fully human. Therefore he will at times try to reject parts of his humanity - things like compassion and conscience. At times, he can be astonishingly selfish and egotistical, and show little regard for the needs and feelings of others. (In truth, he sometimes exhibited this sort of selfishness even before his powers manifested, but now has an easy excuse to justify it.)
The fact that he is now seemingly "death-proof" thanks to his mutation has also served to make him rather indifferent towards the idea of mortality. While he no longer attempts suicide on a regular basis, Chamber will often take dangerous, arguably unnecessary risks "for shits and giggles". This casual disregard for his own well-being may sometimes pose a negative impact for the people around him.
Jono gets bored easily; the fact that he does not sleep gives him a lot of spare time to kill. during these empty hours, his mind will often travel down some particularly dark paths, though he has yet to act on any of these thoughts/fantasies.
Typically, Jono's interpersonal relationships are based upon what purpose the other person serves for him at any given time. When he has no more use for an individual, he will deliberately sabotage the relationship and drive the other person away. He rarely forms close or long-lasting friendships. |
EQUIPMENT
UNIFORM: |
| Jono wears the typical black leather training uniform, with a few modifications. Much of the front of the uniform has been cut away, exposing the black leather bandages underneath. This allows Chamber to more easily remove the bindings and release his powers if called upon to do so. He also customarily augments his uniform with a black leather jacket - either a short motorcycle-style affair, or a longer trench coat - and his favourite pair of boots. |
EQUIPMENT: |
| Acoustic & electric guitars. (Yes, they have names, but no, he's won't admit it.)
80gb MP3 Player
Mobile phone. While this may seem a redundant & utterly useless device for a young man unable to speak, other features, such as text messaging, GPS, etc. still prove invaluable. |
TRANSPORTATION: |
| NYC MetroPass
1980 Vespa P200. British racing green with white stripe. (Yes, it also has a name, and no, he still won't admit it.) |
CONTACTS
CONTACTS: |
| Jono maintains occasional contact with some of his friends and band-mates back in the UK, but it is limited and infrequent. He has had no contact with either of his parents for a number of years. |

HISTORY
Jonothan was born and raised the only child of lower-middle-class parents in Moss Side, England, not far from Manchester. Although much of the crime wave and gang violence of the seventies and eighties had died down in Manchester and its surrounding areas, the resurgence in the late nineties brought back the city's reputation as a ghetto that should be stayed away from. That said, it should be no surprise to hear that Jonothan lead a somewhat sordid life before coming to the Xavier Institute.
From a young age, Jono developed an interest in music and underground youth culture, of which his parents disapproved. While never in a real gang, Jono did have a small group of friends that caused trouble together, and shared his desire to embrace the sex, drugs, and rock-&-roll lifestyle. Together, they formed the band "The Johnnies", with Jono as their frontman. When they weren't rehearsing, graffiti, shoplifting, and breaking & entering were regular pastimes. During this time, Jono became a skilled lockpick, but was also arrested for breaking into a family's home while they were on holiday. (He was let go when the family opted not to press charges.)
It was about the time of his arrest, just before he turned 15, that Jono left home unannounced. He also dropped out of school, failing to complete his O-levels, convinced that mega-stardom was waiting just over this horizon. For over a year, he and the band managed to scrape together enough money to get by playing at small underground clubs. He lived out of a suitcase, crashing on the couch of whoever would take him in. It wasn’t a particularly easy life, but Jono loved every minute of it.
Just before Jonothon turned seventeen, the band was approached by an independent recording company, who wanted to sign them to a contract. The four boys were elated, feeling their status as rock gods was only months away. They traveled down to London to celebrate - a party which descended into a fortnight-long bender of drink, raves, drugs, and assorted debauchery and destruction.
One evening, Jono accompanied Lady Gayle Edgerton, the daughter of a well-known MP, to a concert. Gayle knew she was one of several girlfriends, and Jonothon was well-aware that she only associated with him to horrify her parents. All evening Jono had suffered from chest pain, but disregarded it, knowing he was too young for a heart attack.
After retreating to the Edgerton's estate after the concert, the pair were ... celebrating rather enthusiastically when the pain suddenly became overwhelming. Jono clutched at his chest and screamed until suddenly a blinding light burst through his sternum and he went completely silent. Gail, however, kept screaming, especially when she realized she couldn't feel her legs.
The resulting explosion took out an entire wing of the manor house, and left Gayle permanently crippled. For his part, Jono was left without his lower jaw, chest, and large part of his abdomen, which had been replaced by a burning furnace of psionic energy. He fled the scene immediately, terrified of what might happen next.
In the following days, the tabloids had a field day with the story, and Jono was forced into self-imposed exile, afraid not so much of the bad press, but rather the immediate and violent retribution he would undoubtedly face. He remained in hiding for several months, during which time he repeatedly attempted suicide. He tried almost every conceivable method save for shooting himself, fearing this might cause another massively dangerous flare of the strange fires inside him. None of the attempts were successful, and his depression and self-loathing reached new depths.
He was almost eighteen when he was contacted by Charles Xavier, and invited to attend his Institute for Gifted Youngsters. Jonothon had already lost everything else, and his monstrous appearance made it impossible to go out in public. He still had no real comprehension of what had happened to him, and it seemed that Xavier might be able to supply these explanations. Chamber enrolled in the school, feeling he had nowhere else to go.
Jono has had difficulty socializing with the other students. While he did not always deliberately try to isolate himself, he formed no real genuine or lasting friendships; Chamber was, and remains, reluctant to get too close to anyone, fearing he may injure them the way he did Gayle.
