Rift's not a trouble maker by any means, but he definately seems that way to many people. He's curious about what he can do, and curious about life in general. His powers have gotten him into trouble time after time, and even after being sent to live with his uncle Ben, things only escalated. Johnny Storm's influence on the youngster seemed to make super-heroics even more appealing. He's a sweet boy who has a steady head on his shoulders, but the curiousity he holds leads him to open a variety of doors before knowing what's behind them.

ADVANTAGES:

 

BALANCE- Rift can run across ropes or rails, stand on top of posts, effortlessly climb ropes, and instantly recover from being thrown. His movements are unhindered while doing these things. His spacial awareness seems to have imbued him with an almost supernatural sense of balance.

DIRECTION SENSE- Simply put, Rift can never get lost. His unique mutation guarantees that he always knows where he is, where true north is, and that he can orient himself easily without any external cues.

GOOD MEMORY- While it's not perfect Rift has an above average memory. He has an innate gift to remember most details.

INTERNAL CLOCK- Simply put, Rift has perfect internal timing. 'nuff said.

INTERNAL COMPASS - Rift is never lost or disoriented in any area he has been before. Once Rift gets his bearings, Rift will be at a slight bonus to navigate in a new area. This advantage does not work in alien dimensions or alternate realities.

SHAPESHIFTING AWARENESS- Perhaps the most unusual of all of Rift's gifts is his natural affinity for detecting and keeping track of others. As such, he identifies everyone not on how they look, but by their spacial coordinates - his mind acts very much like 'NORAD'. When he first encounter's someone, his mind naturally 'correlates' who they are with where he has known them to be, and from that point continues to track them on a global scale. Thus, their form is irrelevant to him, it's where they are that counts. To Rift, the a person's name and form mean nothing, when and where they where is everything to him. Note that this only works with those who he's met before and thus 'cataloged'. Likewise, the same goes for those who are able to become invisible. However someone who becomes intangible or 'phased' will be 'invisible' to him.

POWERS:

 

360º PERCEPTION- Rift is aware of his local environment, allowing him to perceive their entire local surrounds as if him had a three-dimensional map in their head. Because of this, Rift is not reliance on his eyes for perceiving their surroundings. Thus, it is enarly impossible to blindside or to sneak up on Rift, as they have in effect a 360 degree field of "vision". Rift is immune to the effects of invisibility and darkness unless such effects directly effect the mind.

SPACIAL RIFT- Rift can create an actual worm hole which near instantly transports anything which passes through the spacial opening or 'rift' to be transposed to where the otherside of the rift has been positioned. The span of a 'rifts' opening is that of up to one hundred yards - large enough for a space shuttle or other small orbital craft to pass safely thorough.

The location of where a rift opens and closes is determined by Rift, the distance which such a spacial rift can traversed is over several hundred thousand miles - Rift is meant to one day be an intergalactic traveller, he's positive of this. Anything, regarless if it's a person, a lazer beam or a rock which passes through his rifts instantly vanishes from where it was and instantly reappears based on the other opening of his 'rift'. Objects do not physically cross the intervening distance and are not affected by any physical barriers. Because this ability acts like a wormhole, objects can not materialize within another object. The discs are two-way meaning that people/objects can travel from one point to another from either side of the portal. He can maintain his largest rifts for almost a minute before they collapse, and smaller, human human sized rifts for up to ten minutes.

Use of his power is physically taxing and requires rest equal to the size of the largest rift created times that one 5 minutes per yard of the rift created. Thus following a battle in which he might create a 'star gate' as he likes to call them would require that he rest for 8 hours. If he sleeps he can cut his recovery time by almost half.

FIGHTING SKILLS:

 

ACROBATICS- Rift can tumble, swing from ropes, walk across thin beams, and leap through windows with the best of them. When he was younger he wanted to be a stunt pilot, and because of that he learned how to tumble and jump and fall thinking that a stunt pilot needed to know such things. They don't. But, surprising he did find out that a certain amount of acrobatic flexibility can not only get you noticed, it can get you into places you might not otherwise be able to.

CLIMBING - Scaling vertical surfaces. CN can reduce the difficulty when resisting wind and acrophobia while scaling buildings, trees, cliffs, and other vertical challenges. This skill lets CN use the environment to there advantage when involved in combat situations. If s/he reduces a foe to 0 body this way, the foe goes comatose. These actions (bites, eye gouges, kidney punches, and so on) are generally frowned upon in heroic circles.

COMPUTERS: General- What kid doesn't know how to use a computer these days? And Rift is no exception. While he might make a great programmer given his mathematical aptitude, he has no real interest in computers beyond looking up local movies, sharing files and checking his e-mail and playing video games when he's bored - which is like all of the time.

JUGGLING- The ease with which Rift learned to juggle might have been a clue to what was to come given his ability for understanding spacial relations. He can, with ease, keep several different objects moving and spinning and dancing in the air simultaneously. He can also catch and redirect objects thrown at him - something that is as surprising handy in a food fight as it is in a knife fight.

JUMPING- Jumping, whether standing, running, high, triple, or even pole-vaulting. You name it, Rift is very adept at it, a skill he's cultivated in his formative years when trying to make a fast exit from a place he wasn't suppose to be most likely.

LOCK PICKING- Locks are nothing more then other peoples way of saying 'look here' in Rifts opinion. He knows he shouldn't, and he can resist the desire to do so, but when he was younger he couldn't always. As such he's learned how to 'jimmy' a manual lock they way you or I might turn a key.

MATHEMATICS- Rift doesn't know why, Reed Richards, his Uncles best friend has theorized that it's just a natural extension of his abilties. Whatever the reason, he has an amazing gift for geometry: measurement, properties, and relationships of objects, using numbers and symbols, algebra, and various abstract mathematic constructs are always apparent to him. To date there is yet to be a mathematical equation he couldn't do in his head as fast as he could read it.

OBSERVATION- Another skill which Rift has developed since the blossuming of his mutations is an keen ability to tell when anything is out of place or has been disturbed in any location he has previously been to. When he looks at a room, it's as if his mind has 'snapped' an eidetic snapshot of the room in three dimensions, and stored it away in his memories with the time, date. He can pull that 'snapshot' up when ever he wishes to compare and contrast that with current conditions of an environment.

STEALTH- Given his curious nature, and his firm believe that a closed door is a door begging to be opened, Rift has learned how to get in and out of places, and he learned this long before his powers ever surfaced. He understands the importance of being aware of ones body, of their body's movements and most importantly of it's limits. This understanding allows them to move with the utmost care and silence, and also to freeze stock-still in a concealing shadow when necessary in an effort to avoid detection. Likewise, s/he can also prowl about rooftops and the like; high-technology electronic systems and some superpowers and heightened senses, however, will negate this ability

PILOTING: Planes- Rift was taught how to operate small, medium, and several very 'unique' types of planes such as the FF's POGO-Plane by his Uncle, the ever-lovin' blue-eyed 'Thing' of the Fantastic Four having taught him to be a pilot. As such he knows how to operate a plane, how to execute landings and take offs, handle in-climate weather situations etc.

STREETWISE- Since coming into his powers, Rift has taken to exploring the world and in the process he's learned a thing or two about the greater world. Canadian money and European money, while it might look similar is completely different. One does not make the 'OK' hand gesture in Germany as it's considered suggestive and obscene. You're not always entitled to 'one phone call' regardless of how loudly you scream your an American. Screaming 'You're an American' may get you pummeled in some parts of the world. In short, he's learned how to handle himself on the streets and how to deal with some of life's seamier sides. He knows who to or not to approach, how to identify gang signs, etc. He knows how to survive.

DISADVANTAGES:

 

ALLERGY- Rift is deathly allergic to peanuts, all it takes is a one or two to cause his esophagus to swell up and cause him to choke violently.

CURIOSITY- Rift is incredible curios, and possesses a burning desire to know 'what's in the box', 'what's behind the curtain', etc. His desire to explore, particularly when it regards that which is obviously 'off limits' tends to get him in trouble.And while he often knows better, the allure of being the first to explore something new, interesting, mysterious, is often too enticing for him to resist. '...ewh look something shiny...'

ENVIRONMENTAL DEPENDANCE- Due to Rift's innate ability to perceive his local surrounds in 360º as if he were viewing a 3-D map, he has learned to draw his spacial co-ordinates from that 3-D map. If he should loose his ability to perceive the world in this manner, he would be unable to accurately control the wormholes that he makes, where they opened, etc.

MORTAL- When it comes down to the nitty gritty, Rift is human. His body is as susceptible to pain and injury as the next person. A baseball bat to the head, a bullet to the chest, an allergic reaction to a peanut, a slip in the shower, any of these things will could result in Benj's death.

iPHONE - A type of 'smart phone' made by Apple, the 'iPhone' is a kind of mobile phone which offers advanced capabilities beyond those typical of a mobile phone, often with PC-like functionality to Rift in the field. It has the latest and greatest in modern computer hardware packed into its collapsible frame, and is able to create and work with a wide variety of media-storage. It has a global positioning system and encrypted wireless uplink to the Internet. The software is primarily focused on aiding investigation and research tasks.

FANTASTIC FOUR - Rift's uncle is Ben Grimm of the Fantastic Four, as such he has a direct connection to the world famous quartet and has not only met them, he's stayed at their base, the Baxter Building several times while visiting in America.

MASTERS, ALICIA - The fiancee of his uncle Ben Grimm, Alicia Masters is a world renown blind sculptress whose works have been showcased in the Guggenheim, the MET and the Smithsonian. She is considered by many to be a national treasure, and she is much beloved by those who know her.


RELATIVES:

 

GRIMM, BEN (Thing) - Rift was named after his uncle Ben Grimm, better known to the world as The Thing of the Fantastic Four. Ben Grimm is his godfather.

GRIMM, JENNIFER (Sister) - Twin sister.

GRIMM, MARTHA (Mother) - Cliqued as it might sound, Benj's parents met on an airline flight. His mother, a stewardess met and fell almost instantly for James Grimm, a pilot flying to the airlines London hub. She reworked her scheduled and soon started working with and then dating James Grimm and later moved to London to start a family with him.

GRIMM, JAMES (Father) - A former naval test pilot, James Grimm is the younger brother of the Fantastic Four's Ben Grimm. When he left the Navy he found work as an Airline pilot, met his wife Martha Poloksui and settled in UK to raise a family.

YANCY STREET GANG - Like his Uncle, Rift has a standing feud with the mysterious members of the Yancy Street gang. Like his uncle he is no closer to knowing exactly who these annoying hooligans are but if he ever finds out he'll be first in line to punch their practical joke pulling asses one right in the kisser.



HISTORY

Born to an American couple who for a job opportunity abroad, he was raised by an his Brooklyn breed parents in the United Kingdom . Born in the hours before daybreak, he was named after his father's older brother Ben Grimm of the now world famous Fantastic Four. Although when he was named after his uncle, his uncle, he had yet to become the world famous astronaut, let alone the ever-lovin' blue-eyed 'Thing' of the Fantastic Four. His parents took him all around the world as a child for various vacations, a benefit of his own father being a pilot for Trans World Airlines, as such he has actually been to all seven continents before the age of seven. By the age of eight he had become smitten by the idea of being a test pilot like his Uncle who he watched on the tele as he piloted an experimental craft into outer space for Von Doom Industries. Prior to this he'd wanted to grow up to be either a Shetland pony or a high-rise window washer.

With the desire to be a test pilot having taken firm root within him, Benj started bugging his parents for permission to join the after school gymnastic program. There he displayed great aptitude for tumbling, and while the idea that he might one day go to the Olympics never crossed anyone's minds as a possibility, he did do his parents proud particularly on the matts and the balance beam.

Fast forwards several years, and Benj had moved from through several phases - Being an 'A' student, a junior soccer star, an amateur magician for which his parents were very thankful when that phase ended and they could get rid and their household cat could rest easier knowing that it would be in the position of substituting for a rabbit one-more-time. All of that ended when he found himself in the 'small house', sentence with breaking and entering, he was sent to juvenile hall for two months which he did not like. In fact, he disliked it so much that he engineered almost twenty different escapes and turned a two month sentence into almost a two year stay in which he somehow always managed to be home for Christmas and Guy Foxworthy Day.

Fearing that he was fork in his life, and that neither folk was leading him to any place particularly good, his parents chose to send him to the America's for one summer with the hope that the change of local might make a difference. And so Benj spend the summer with his namesake who was now the world famous 'Thing' of the Fantastic Four. His uncle promptly took him over his bent knee and wailed the shit out of his backside for breaking his mother's heart and disappointing his father the way he had. His uncle gave it to him straight and his uncle kept a tight watch on him. It made an impression on him. So did his Uncle's best friend the incredibly hot Johnny Storm. The Human Torch lite up Benj's heart with thoughts of adventure and a lot of 'private' time in that bathroom. Soon, both Johnny Storm and his uncle began teaching him how to pilot simple planes and motor vehicles, etc. with the hope of showing Benj that he had options.

All of this led to the inevitable day when Benj accompanied his uncle to Stark Industries to watch his uncle test an experimental orbital plane. Benj wanted to accompany his uncle on the test flight itself but was forbidden. However his desire was such to be on that test flight was everything to him and so he opened one of his spacial rifts and stepped onto the flight deck of vessel after takeoff, much to everyones surprise. Even more to everyone's surprise was the second warp hole that opened, shifting the craft hundreds of thousands of mile. Especially Tony Stark and Stark enterprises who had to find the vessel which shifted to the far side of the moon. Following that flight, and a very, very, very long lecture by his uncle, Benj was diagnosed as a mutant and with a few pulled strings, enrolled in the Xavier Institute.
