HISTORYBorn in the early 1980's, James Madrox was the only son of two researchers working at the Los Alamos Research Center in New Mexico. In the course of their work, his parents were exposed to enough radiation to produce subtle alterations in their genetic material. Thus their son was born a mutant. Moments after birth, James's power became evident: when the doctor spanked him, the concussive force caused him to multiply into two identical physical beings. The second self merged with the first in a few minutes. Shaken by the bizarre phenomenon, the Madrox family moved to a farm in Kansas where they could raise the boy in privacy. Dr. Madrox created a special suit for his son which insulated the boy from kinetic forces over the critical threshold point which caused replication, and forced the boy to wear it constantly. As James grew up, he was not aware of his mutant power, but only of being forced to always wear the same clothes. The next few years seemed to fly by, and James grew into a fine young man. His mutation a huge help to his parents as he could create a number of dupes and send them out to do the many different tasks that maintained the farm as the money that was being generated from it was supporting the whole family. One day, it all came crashing down around them. A boy witnessed James' trip on a piece of machinery in the fields and was shocked to see another James suddenly spring out of him and walk around as if nothing had happened. Quickly, the conservative community became outraged at the thought of a 'mutant demon at the Madrox farm' and stormed the place, burning it to the ground. James escaped, but his parents and a dupe that accidentally formed when he fell out of bed during the blaze, did not. Since James was believed to be dead, the mob dispersed. The fifteen-year-old James began wandering the country, taking odd jobs for food and necessities, until his suit began to malfunction. As he became more desperate, he started stealing to support himself. One day, he was caught breaking into a pawn shop in Brooklyn by its owner. The police arrived, and while he was being placed in the patrol car, he accidentally bumped his head. The dupe was quickly reabsorbed in front of the astonished policemen, but the damage had been done. Later that night, an unmarked black van pulled up in front of the station where James was spending the night locked up before his arraignment. Four men emerged and entered the building. A fierce argument ensued between them and the police inside that ended with a disheveled and confused James being loaded in the back of the van. The next morning, the arresting officers found no record of James Madrox anywhere. He had simply had ceased to exist. The van took James to a facility somewhere in Canada. He saw nothing after leaving the police station until he was on the grounds. Weapon X was a black ops organization that existed outside of the government and was dedicated to researching and testing mutant abilities by any means necessary. It was to become his new and permanent home. James was placed in a white, padded room with no furniture. When he refused to demonstrate his ability, three guards with foam bats entered to provide the necessary kinetic impact. Within minutes, a couple of dozen sixteen-year-old replicas were created and herded away. After that, James's life became an endless series of tests and experiments. Over time, he was given some perks, like his own small bungalow on the grounds, but he never forgot that he was a prisoner. Occasionally, he would be commanded to produce a bunch of dupes that were always immediately removed from his presence. They were quickly taken to another room and gassed into a deep sleep. Then, each was placed into a stasis pod which lowered their vital functions so that their bodies only aged two or three days over the course of a year. Some never woke up, since their organs were harvested for VIPs that were a good match. Many of them were brought back to participate in experiments that called for "healthy male volunteers". Upon conclusion, they were euthanized and dissected in the name of science. The lucky ones were thawed out and given a task to complete or a skill to learn. Once accomplished, they were reabsorbed by James. He was then extensively tested to see what he retained. After a decade, only three of the original batch remained, and the decision was made to transfer their pods to a storage facility at another location. En route, the caravan was attacked by a group enraged by the stories that had leaked out about the facility and determined to cause problems. An explosion ripped through the truck with the pods destroying two of them and killing the occupants instantly. The final pod was thrown clear and slid down a hill into a nearby river unnoticed by the forces fighting around it. The damage it sustained activated a fail-safe that slowly woke up the last remaining sixteen-year-old dupe. He had only aged a few weeks in the ten years since his creation. Jamie awoke confused and naked as the pod collided with the bank of the river. Climbing out, he stood up and realized that NYC was across the water. He had a vague memory of being in a white room and hearing a hissing sound, Other than that, he knew nothing. After stealing some clothes, he made it to Manhattan and almost immediately realized something was wrong. His reflection looked the same, but nothing else was right. As the enormity of the situation started to sink in, he entered a trance-like state and began to wander the city in a daze. Deep down he knew he had been placed in the pod years before, and that meant he could not be the original. Meanwhile, at the institute, the staff found out about the attack on the caravan. Using Cerebra, Professor Xavier became aware of Jamie and set off with Storm to find him. With Jean helping, they tracked him to NYC, finding him curled up and unresponsive on the steps of the New York Public Library. He moved as if he was just a shell with nothing inside. They quickly brought him back to the infirmary. Jamie spent the next two weeks in a catatonic state. Mentally, his mind issued only white noise with no coherent thoughts. The staff was not sure how to handle the situation. One day, they were shocked when he woke up and began talking like nothing had happened. Initially, the staff felt it was best for him to deal with the truth of his origin. Between the news about the bank-robbing James and the telepathic abilities of both Jean and Xavier, they understood almost immediately what had happened. Attempts were made by Xavier, Jean, Ororo, and Dr. McCoy, but it became apparent quickly that Jamie was not ready to process the truth. He would use any excuse, no matter how illogical, to avoid admitting he was a dupe, and continuing the conversation resulted in irrational anger or emotional retreat. The decision was made to let him process it on his own timetable and to provide support when needed. Jamie was devastated by the death of Xavier on many levels, but as usual, he is using laughter as a way to hide the pain. He fits in well at the school and likes being around others for many reasons. Since he grew up isolated, his social development is a little behind, but he learns quickly. The administration at Weapon X knows about the younger Jamie but they have decided to leave him at the school to see how he socializes and grows. At this point, he is in complete denial about his origin and has buried it deep inside. Recent PostsD: Excalibur - Gino's Italian Ristorante [Jun 13, 2009] -- Jamie offers Illyana and Paige a couple of his tactics for dealing with unfamiliar menus. After ordering, he is surprised by Sarah's question but answers her quickly. He then wonders why she asked it when he realizes no one has ever thought about it before. He waits for her answer, happy to be in the conversation with her. D: Excalibur - Gino's Italian Ristorante [Jun 11, 2009] -- Jamie enjoys his ride to the restaurant. He briefly ponders the difficulty any guy would have trying to date Illyana or Paige with their big, super-powered brothers at the school. Once there, he thanks Sarah for her compliment from earlier. At that time, he had been overwhelmed by the attention of both her and Laurie. All along, he is realizing Sarah intrigues him. D: Excalibur's Dinner Nite [Jun 9, 2009] -- Jamie reminisces about his pleasant afternoon deciding on outfits with Miguel but is still late to the foyer. He looks around the group, happy to be there, and then apologizes for his tardiness first to Betsy and then to the squad. He ends by verifying the car's occupants with Miguel, Illyana, and Sarah before realizing how excited he is about his new squad. D: Excalibur [Jun 6, 2009] -- Jamie listens to the conversation and his objections to the new team fade away. He accepts Sarah and Illyana's offer to ride with the and suggests he and Miguel pick out outfits together. He then thanks Betsy for her honesty, apologizes to the group and reaffirms his commitment to Excalibur. He ends with a question to Dallas, D: Excalibur [Jun 2, 2009] -- Jamie is angered, hurt, and feels rejected since he was the only Corsair not to stay. He arrives at the gathering emotionally raw and makes some harsh judgment calls about some of those assembled, especially Dallas and Laurie because of his leadership position and the parallels with Teddy and Billy. Sensing there is some down time, he approaches Betsy to ask how the final squad determinations were made. D: Assembly [May 31, 2009] -- Jamie is late (as usual) to the assembly. He has spent the past couple of days resolving to become more proactive and less indecisive. He also realized he needs to work on budgeting time. Scott makes his announcement moments after Jamie enters the room. Jamie sees it as a chance to prove himself but is also worried the Corsairs have been disbanded. R: Waiting for the Storm to Pass [May 27, 2009] -- Jamie gives up with the hat after Andromeda's comment and takes it off. This act chills him to the core, and he happily accepts her offer to get some food. After asking Billy to join them, he tells her to lead the way. Caught up in his battles with the hat, he fails to notice anything about the different ways of speaking. R: Taking the Plunge [May 27, 2009] -- Jamie apologizes for his bluntness to Dominick and makes a New Year's resolution to be both more confident and do it appropriately. Meanwhile, the dupe tells Jean-Paul that he sees a similarity between JP's actions and Jamie's avoidance of uncomfortable situations by using humor. R: Taking the Plunge [May 25, 2009] -- Jamie realizes the rumors about Dominick's involvement with the vandalism are true based on the other boy's taunting of Jean-Paul. He and the dupe also lash out at the perception, shown by both the other boys, that Jamie always needs saving and shouldn't be taken seriously. He points out that Dominick's verbal threat to Jean-Paul could be considered an attack just like Jean-Paul's groping of him. He ends by asking the two other boys to back off and let him relax or just leave. R: Taking the Plunge [May 25, 2009] -- Jean-Paul's actions cause Jamie to flee and accidently create a dupe. The new Jamie wastes no time in telling off Jean-Paul about his lack of social graces. He also questions Jean-Paul's perfect exterior but inability to accept sympathy or compassion from anyone without reacting badly. |
