In contrast, Nightcrawler also has a knack for the spontaneous and exciting. He sees himself as a swashbuckler, usually comparing himself to Errol Flynn. He always tries to be charming and gallant, despite his looks and overall physique. Due to his time in the circus he is a natural performer and showman, often seen as a joker, jester and all around prankster. |

SPECIAL ABILITIES
ADVANTAGES: |
| AMBIDEXTROUS - Nightcrawler is equally capable of performing any task with either hand from writing to rolling dice, In the case of Nightcrawler this includes his tail.
BALANCE - Due to his acrobat training in the circus Nightcrawler can run across ropes or rails, stand on top of posts, effortlessly climb ropes, and instantly recover from being thrown across a room. His movements are largely unhindered while doing these things.
CAT-STALK - He can get to his destination almost invisibly. If someone wasn't watching him when they began, he is likely to get where they are going without being seen or heard.
COMBAT REFLEXES - Highly sensative reflexes and automatic motor response.
DOUBLE-JOINTED - Nightcrawler can bend his limbs and joints far more than most people. He can fit into any space equal to half his height and width, extremely flexibility. |
POWERS: |
| PREHENSILE TAIL - Due to his physical mutation Nightcrawler has a demonic looking tail which he can use almost as a third arm. Although it does not have an opposable thumb which limits him in the use of this tail. He is known to hang from his tail and can lift small objects he can hold on to with it.
TELEPORTATION (Bamfing) - Nightcrawler is a mutant with the ability to teleport himself, the clothes he is wearing, and, within limits, a certain amount of additional mass which is in contact with him. That amount of additional mass finds its limit in his lifting abilities. He can appearantly only carry items or persons he would be able to pick up and hold aloft for at least a couple of seconds. NOTE: When he transports a passenger over even moderate distances, the one transported will feel nauseous, weakened and ill, to the point of exhaustion.
The longer the distance over which Nightcrawler teleports himself, the harder and more exhausting it is for him to make the teleportational "jump." It is easier for him to teleport between north and south (along Earth's magnetic lines of force) than it is for him to teleport between east and west (against the magnetic lines). Under optimal conditions, teleporting only himself and his costume, Nightcrawler can displace himself a distance of about 2 miles east-to-west, and up to 3 miles north-to-south. Making a vertical teleportation upwards is difficult (due to gravitational pull) and dangerous. Nightcrawler has made a vertical teleportational "jump" of 2 miles by pushing himself to his physical limits.
He consciously determines his point of return and it must be in his line of sight (or very familiar), lest he run the risk of materializing partially or entirely within a solid object. If too much of his body materialized within a solid object, he would probably be killed or at least badly crippled. When he disappears in teleporting, Nightcrawler leaves behind a blue puff of sulfurous smoke. His teleportation is invariably accompanied by the muffled sound of imploding air rushing to fill the vacuum left where Nightcrawler volume was (his signature "BAMF!" noise).
Nightcrawler's powers automatically displace liquids and gases when he arrives in the course of a teleportation. Nightcrawler's momentum is retained throughout the process of teleportation: he arrives with whatever amount of inertia he left with.
WALLCRAWLING - Nightcrawler is able to unconsciously control the inter-atomic bonds between his molecules and those of other objects which enables him to cling to solid surfaces. Thus, he can stick to walls or any other solid surface provided to him. This will not work on fluids, so that he cannot use that power to prevent himself from drowning, for example.
INVISIBILITY (limited) - Nightcrawler's deep blue skin allows him to blend into shadows, making him invisbile for all intents and purposes while in shadow. His gold eyes may be visible if someone is looking in the right place. This is not true invisbility and Nightcrawler could still be detected by abilities that would allow someone to do so (such as infravision) |
FIGHTING SKILLS: |
| ACROBATICS - Gymnastic movement. Nightcrawler can tumble, swing from ropes, walk across thin beams, and leap through windows. He reduces the difficulty when trying to lessen damage from falls and dodging attacks, if he has sufficient room to move acrobatically.
COMBAT STYLE - Brawling- His improvised fighting style lets Nightcrawler inflict damage when using fists, claws, teeth and his tail. These actions are generally frowned upon in heroic circles, but then again NIGHTCRAWLER doesn't view himself as a hero.
WEAPON STYLE (Sword) - Nightcrawler has the ability to fight with any type of sword, given he can lift it. His personal favorite is his rapier. He also has limited sword control with his tail.
RELIGION & LINGUISTICS - Extensive knowledge of Catholicism, fluent in both German and Latin. |
DISADVANTAGES: |
| CHIVALROUS - Nightcrawler must right any wrongs he witnesses, correct social injustice, keep any oaths of loyalty he swears, and honor all deals and obligations he accepts. He must honor good people. This disadvantage includes a vow of poverty.
MONSTROUS - Horrific, demonic appearance.
MORAL CODE - No matter what, Nightcrawler will not kill or more importantly, allow someone else to kill or be killed by there actions or lack there of regardless of the situation or mitigating circumstances. Likewise, and to a lesser degree, they will not permit others to be harmed and try to minimize property damage where possible. Saving lives takes precedence over all, even over catching the bad guys. Needless to say there are times when this code causes problems. |

HISTORY
Kurt Wagner was born with certain unusual physical characteristics, but his power of teleportation did not emerge until puberty. Moments after his birth he was taken in by the Szardos family, a group of Bavarian acrobats. The mother Margali later told him that she had found his father, Stef Wagner, dying of a heart attack by the road side. His mother in a nearby shed, also dying because of complications at birth. She said she took him to the circus, where she worked as a fortune teller and raised her as her own.
Together as a family they traveled with "Circus Herman Renz" from town to town across Western Europe, including (but not limited to) the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and France, sometimes foraying into Austria and even Russia. The Szardos family were devout Roman Catholics and soon Kurt converted to Catholicism. By example, Kurt learned to live and love like the Szardos'. His newfound religion allowed him cope with his appearance and the unloving manner in which others treated and responded to him.
To mask his appearance from spectators, he would wrap his tail around one leg and wear a devil's mask while performing. Thus, those that noticed his pointed ears would believe it to be part of a demonic custom. Although the Szardos family were superb athletes, they could not compare to Kurt. Kurt soon stole the show and became a respected performer amongst his peers. It was not long before Kurt became a main attraction at the circus. He was soon dubiously christened "The Incredible Nightcrawler" on the circus advertising one-sheet. people came from throughout the entire country to come and see him perform. Unlike other outcast mutants, Nightcrawler had found a niche that allowed him to survive.
However, his relatively normal life was soon robbed from him. One fateful performance Nightcrawler slipped and was forced to use his teleportation power in order to save his own life. At a subsequent performance, an unidentified mutant from the audience attacked Nightcrawler. The Szardos family were all murdered defending their adopted son. Nightcrawler, now infuriated, attacked the murderous mutant with a knife, slashing both of his Achilles tendons. Before he could deliver a deathblow unknown tactical forces invaded the circus tent.
Left no choice but to run, Kurt teleported, and teleported, and teleported far, far away. After extreme exhaustion he was forced to rest in small town in the French Alps, he sought refuge at the local church. A Catholic priest, named Desmoulins, took him in and hid him in the Church's basement. During his time here he gave himself the distinctive tattoos and skin markings that adorn his entire body.
The unknown tactical team soon descended on the small French village and searched for Nightcrawler but to no avail. Kurt spent the next fmonth of his life living in hiding amongst many old religious documents, discarded statues and broken stained glass. In this time he brushed up on his Latin language skills and got a bigger than average insight into the Catholic faith.
One Sunday afternoon after Mass the priest that had taken Kurt in, answered the rectory door. Father Desmoulins was then forced into the rectory and questioned at gunpoint. He was later found murdered by a bullet to the head. Local villagers recalled seeing a man with facial hair and glasses entering the town in a black Hummer. Kurt happening upon the murdered Desmoulins and was filled with a deep sorrow. As tears welled in his eyes, three armed men burst from their hiding places and shot Kurt with a sedative.
Kurt awoke to the sound of William Stryker's voice, fully lucid but unable to control all of his actions Kurt was a prisoner in his own body. He was trained for several months in a secret Weapon-X facility, all the while exposed to a powerful neural drug administered at the base of the neck. William Stryker was obsessed with the destruction of mutant kind. The United States government was unwilling to take the steps he thought necessary to neutralize the "mutant threat", therefore, he would give them a good reason to rethink their policy. Consequently, he would send one of his mutant slaves to do his dirty work, to get the government policy rolling in the "right" direction. Kurt was sent on a mission to assassinate the President but would fail after being shot by a Secret Service Agent. The shock from being shot broke his neural subjugation and he escaped.
He was later tracked by Charles Xavier who sent Jean and Storm to an abandoned church in Boston and Kurt was to be taken back to the institute. They never reached there however. They were called to another part of Boston to pick up Bobby, Rogue, John, and Logan. From there they went to Canada where he aided in their actions to stop Stryker's attempt to kill off the entire Mutant population by using Professor Xavier's strong mental abilities and a twisted version of his Cerebro.
After these escapades Nightcrawler felt that the X-Men's existence was too violent for his view on life and he returned to Europe to rejoin the circus. But it was never the same again. While he had been part of the family he was now viewed as an outcast, some even held him accountable for what happened to the Szardos family.
The events leading to the death of Professor Xavier, Cyclops and Jean Grey led him to long back to the only place he felt he had left, the institute. He returned to New York and rejoined the school and be with people who would accept him for the person he was.
